Took a wico c mag apart last night and I noticed that there was a lot more back and forth play than usual when you pushed-pulled the impulse-/rotor shaft before disasembly.Should that slop be taken out,and what would you do to fix that problem? Thanks

34gpa, Duane's numbers sound good to me. Something else to watch out for on the Wico C mags is make sure the rotor tube the bushing presses into is not loose in the aluminum housing. If tube is loose or bushings worn bad it will allow magnet to rub on pole pieces causing no fire or erratic firing. If you see a "3" on side of housing casting it is later replacement improved housing and should be okay and new bushings and shims as Duane mentions should fix it. If the rotor tube is loose look for another mag or housing as there as I have never seen a good way to fix those. Wico had some problems with early C mags and upgraded improving it some but then when good aluminum was scarce during war years and more zinc added to the mix the problems became worse again. Wico did a factory housing replacement program after war years before Wico XH mags came out but many older C mag housings didn't get replaced and still out there going bad after replacement program was discontinued long ago. I have seen the shafts worn beyond service use also that will no longer work with undersize bushings. If you suspect that email me as I probably have some used or exchange magnet rotors.

34gpa,
There are two common causes for your problem. The first is the ends of the bushings in which the rotor spins are worn - they are available and can be replaced but they may require reaming after installation. The second cause is wear on the plate deep inside the magnetic rotor that can contact the bushing. Thin shims can be used to take up this slack - I put them on the end of the stalk before I put the magnetic rotor in place. Some movement seems to be the norm but I would have to measure some to give a number. Perhaps 0.025" is common - but 0.050" is too much.
Glen may have some numbers when he wakes up....
