I recently purchased a JD L or LA. How do I tell what I have? The serial number tag is long gone, so is the sheet metal. Can anyone help with Identifing the year or actual model I have. What do I look for?

Thanks.

You cannot tell the difference by the frame type. I have an original LA with a hollow tube frame.

I'm betting if your LA has a hollow opening in the frame. Then it has really heavy wall thickness of approx. 1/2" where as an L is pretty thin like normal pipe would be like 1/4" wall or thinner. Alot of the LA's had solid frames ,But I have seen one with this heavy frame and a hole right up through the center.

i think the LA has a solid tube frame and the L has a hollow tube frame.

The most obvious way to tell the difference is to check the rear wheels. The L has pressed steel rear wheels with the rims riveted to the centers. They use 22" rear tires. The LA has heavy cast rear wheels with removable rims with 24" tires.
