I am working on a 49 D. It has a DTLX 13 Carb on it. I know that it is not original because of the modifications done to it. I also know that this tractor should have a DTLX 63 Carb on it. My question is will this tractor run OK on the 13 or should I look for a 63. It was not a running tractor when I got it. I am restoring it.

2cylfarmer -- take a stroll over to the JD-H Restoration Site (below) and whence arriving, look on the left side for -- CARB ID CHARTS. One-click there, and when it comes up, see pages 1 & 2 for carburetors used on Waterloo Lettered series tractors. With that chart and what you have, hopefully you can unravel the ID knot! (PatB)

2cylfarmer,
One other possibility - some carburetor bowls have the number DLT13 cast in - but that is not the carb number. The carb number is cast or stamped on the load needle side near the air intake flange. If you have a cast-iron carb it could be a DLTX16 or 63 for your D. DLT13 bowls were used on the later carbs, so check the location for your carb number.

I have looked again at my carb number on the body of the carb. It is not stamped very deep. It could be a 16, with the six being on a slant. I realize that these numbers were stamped by hand and probably not stamped perfectly square with the carb. The other thing is that the hole where the water valve should be is larger. It is 1/4 NPT

I was thinking later he couldn't have a DLTX-3 on there unless someone modified the linkage as those work reverse of later Ds.

There isn't a DLTX-13 but was a DLTX-3 brass all fuel carb used on Ds 49774-109943. Also a DLTX-16 all fuel used on Ds 128111-161644. A DLTX-3 brass is worth something for a early D so you should be able to able to trade that brass carb to someone that needs it for some $$ to boot for a proper DLTX-63 carb. If a 16 and you aren't going to pull a big load with it and happy with it then fine. The DLTX-63 was last carb design for a D and when used with a R10126R gasoline nozzle helps you get the most from that D on gasoline. You need to put a 63 on and up compression some and change timing to 25º to realize the full potential of that late D. If the end of exhaust manifold that meets the carb is round it's a all fuel manifold. If the that flange is shaped like the carb flange then it's the JD D gasoline manifold.
