I have a 1961 jd 4010 that has 2200 hours so i know it has been overhauled. My question is will it have been upgraded to the 404 that is in 4020s. The casting number on the block is R40930.

At 2200 hours its not broken in. Most likely the tachometer and tachometer cable have been broken or have rolled over the 9999.99 a time or two.

The head bolts and the bell housing bolts should show marks in the paint from wrenches if its been apart, even if its been repainted those marks will probably show through unless it was thoroughly stripped.

Unless a Deere dealer can trace its serial number and authorized service, the only way to know what size pistons it has will be to pull the head or the oil pan and measure the bore of the cylinders.

A friend of mine who worked for Deere said that Deere stopped producing the kit for the 4010 in 1985 and went to using the 4020 kit only at that time. So if the overhaul came after 1985 it should have been upgraded.

Did you mean 22 thousand hours? If so, yes it very likely has the 4020 kit in it.
