How difficult is it to replace a headgasket on a 1961 4010 diesel. And what could casue it to blow one. Is it something that if i put a new one in everything be ok or is it something that i put a new on in and it blows becasue of another problem. I believe that the gasket blew becasue tractor was being abused. It was started severl times while temps were below freezing and dogged on before the engined warmed up any. Thanks

measure the top of the sleeves to the block surface. they should be .001 to .004 above the block but more important make sure the sleeves are square to the surface. some 4010 had sleeves tilted and it was necassary to use a sweeny cutting tool to cut the block to square the holes and then shim to get the .001 to .004 diminsion .If this is not correct you can look forward to replacing head gaskets frequently. I would think that by now it would have been overhauled and this corrected. Just a thought.

4010boy, I'll add to the good advice msb gave by adding that I always use some long bolts without heads to use as guide dowels when lowering the head onto the gasket. This keeps the head from slipping and damaging the gasket. I usually use a couple of old head bolts with the heads cut off and screwdriver slots cut in the top to thread them out when finished. Hope this helps. Mike

Not a big job, but while you have the head off, take it to a machine shop, have the valves ground and the surface rough ground. The good ole EPA had the gasket manufacturers to quit using asbestos in the gasket. As a result head gaskets are quite a bit harder and also even more prone to blow now. Also get a set of the latest new head bolts and install them as directed by Deere's latest service bulletin concerning head bolts. The rough surface helps hold (bites)the gasket in place. I install the gasket first on the block. Then use a couple pieces of steel strapping on top of the gasket. That way you can slide the head in place without scratching the new gasket. Bend the straps in an ell shape so they stay put and not slide when you move the head.Pry the head up enough to then slip the straps out when you have the head placed on the dowels.
