OT Computer Question

After a ton of work n phone calls last week (I upgraded to Vista just cuz I got a free disc), Im convinced the best way to install Windows Vista is a COMPLETE CLEAN FULL INSTALL NOTTTTT TTTTT T AN UPGRADE FROM XP.

So heres my question:: Is it possible for me to install a fresh clean full Windows Vista on a secondarty back up SATA Hard Drive,,,,, ,,,then get it set up to boot up n run off that secondary HD (by changing the boot configuration prioroty in BIOS),,,,, ,,,,, then install my programs,,,,, ,,,,, ,then copy n paste saved program data off the original SATA Hard Drive,,,,, ,,,then re set things for the old HD to serve as the secondary slave????? ???

I got a new puter with full factory Vista install that runs great, but this one with the Upgrade type install SUCKS. The Vista disk I have allows either a full install or the upgrade from XP option so I wanna run a full install on a second HD then go from there. Yep I already know some programs are incompatible with Vista, thats NOT my problem, its that I wanna try the question I posed above.

I think Vista will be happiest starting on a blank drive all to its lonesome, just one drive. Hold the old primary drive in reserve but disconnected. Set the bios if needed for just the one drive. Vista will likely want to format it. Let it do it. Load to that drive. Then connect up the old drive (second controller or slave vs. the new drive that was a primary controler or drive). Some programs will still run, but many won't even after reloading. One of the schemes of each new OS is to require you to scrap your existing software and buy new even when the new software doesn't work as well as the old (if simply because of the learning curve). Vista, I've seen reports to say, is less tolerant of old 16 bit programs that ran under windoze 3.1, to the point of not letting them run even with the tricks that made them run under XP. And Vista doesn't tolerate many 32 bit programs either.

Since XP and I presume Vista wishes to tell Redmond about what software each user uses, I won't tolerate them on a computer of mine. My latest running windoze is 98SE and its fairly reliable, otherwise I'm running Linux for surfing and OS/2 Warp 4 for work.

Thanks Gerald, I plan to install a brand new drive,,,,, ,,,,disconnect the old one completely,,,,, ,,,put Windows Vista disk in (it will look to boot there first) and let it format or do whatever it darn well pleases to install a fresh new full clean installation,,,,, ,,,,set the new HD jumpers to master and old one to slave,,,,, ,let her boot up again n find the second drive,,,,, ,,then transfer data AFTER I INSTALL programs on the new HD.

Like I said the new puter with factory fresh Vista is fine and Im confident the old one will be fine when I get rid of that phony upgrade install

Take care
