My friend has a JD 40W which he has in his woods infront of his house. He has talked to me about getting rid of it, it needs alot of work and hasn't run for about 5 years. the tires are shot. How good of a tractor are the 40W's? I have a '51 Farmall H, Ford 8n, '43 JD A and some others, but don't have experience with the vertical 2-cylinders. How are they to work on? Thanks.

Parts are readily available EXCEPT the nose sheet metal, and the transmission intermediate gear. Often this gear got a tooth knocked off if the 40W was used for heavy PTO work (bush hog). Is the swinging drawbar there - that would be expensive to replace.
Easy to work on.

It would be equivalent to a Super C with 3 pt.

What they said and the 40W was only made in '55.

All of the 40 series are pretty tough little tractors with a lot of grit! Big step in gearing between 3 and 4 but still nice tough little tractors.

Actually if it is a true 40 W the tag will say 40 W if it is a 40 tricycle with a wide front end it will just say 40.

If you have a true 40 W these should be gaining value as less than 1800 were built. It may well bring $2000 as is. On ebay a 40 U of which around 5000 ? were made one just brought over $7000 fixed up pretty nice.

You better grab that one up !!!!!

40W is a relatively simple tractor. The vertical cyclinders are about 100 cu in and 20 HP. They do not have live PTO. Parts are easy to get, mostly. In good running condition with everything there a 40W will bring about 2000.00.
Good Luck Steve
