Piston rings for late styled B - help!

I bought some piston rings for my late styled B (John Deere part number AB4039R). I got these from my local JD dealer. However, two of the rings look different than the old ones that came out of the tractor. All of the old rings have a square face towards the cylinder wall. In the new set of rings, one ring for each cylinder has a narrow "ridge" that faces the cylinder wall. Has anyone seen this type of ring, and most importantly, where does this ring go on the piston? In the number one groove (the "top")? Or does it go in the 4th groove? My JD dealer can't seem to get a an answer for me. Thanks for any advice!!

Mike- Thank you very much! Sorry about the blury photo, but you are correct that I was confused about the piston ring on the left. The one on the far right is wider so clearly will only fit in the bottom groove. The one on the left is the "mystery ring", and the three in the middle are all identical. At any rate, I will take your advice and put the ring on the left in the 4th groove from the top. Also thanks for the advice on testing the end gap just to make sure I have the right rings. Thanks again!

That ring set should of came with directions each ring in a seperate pack labled as to where it goes.

Is there a dot on one side of any of the rings ? if so this goes to the top ( combustion chamber side ) of the piston. I'm not too clear what type of rings those others are ? can you post a picture ? I have had some weird oil rings the were kinda a V shape look to the edges. If this is these they go clear at the bottom and the bevel goes to the top and the flat edge to the bottom.

Thanks for the reply. Yes, each ring has a dot, and there was a small sheet of instructins that said to put the dot toward the "top" side. The rings were not in individually labeled packets.

The ring that is causing me confusion does have a beveled edge along with the "ridge". I took a picture but can't see a way to attach it to this message. If you are willing to give me your e-mail address I could send it to you.

I posted two pictures in the "parts and pieces" section of this website. These might help explain my constrenation. Thanks to anyone who can help me figure out which groove my "mystery" piston ring goes into.

Hard for me to see , but I think I know what you are talking about. The one on the far left is hard to see but if it is different than the 3 in the center then it goes in the 4th groove from the top put the dot to the top I think you said it has one. This is what I think is a scraper ring. I first thought you were asking about the one on the Right side, but it is wider and goes in the bottom most groove on the skirt it is the oil ring. Bevel to the top, flat side to the bottom. The 3 that are alike go with the dot to the top in grooves 1,2,3

Always a good idea to stick the new rings in a cylinder by theirself and push in place with a bare piston to square them up and then measure the end gap to make sure they are the right size for your cylinder.
