My 2010 generator wasn't charging and gen idiot light stayed on, so I had my friends take it off one day and took it to neighbor to put in new brushes. Problem is my friends took the 2 wires off the generator posts and did not label them, they look the same with same diameter posts.
I attached the wires to the generator best I could match and started tractor and nothing has burned up yet. Still the generator idiot light stays on and not charging, then I read manual and realized I did NOT polarize generator either. It's positive ground. My question is if I did not polarized the generator, would the generator light stay on and if the 2 wires on the generator posts are reversed, what would happen ?? Thanks Jim

Jim,

"My question is if I did not polarized the generator, would the generator light stay on"

I think thats possible (no charge n idiot light staying on), it depends on what, if any, state of residual magnetism was in the gennys iron field poles and if it were polarized at one polarity and started up in opposite polarity of the battery it could even harm the Voltage Regulator, IFFFFF F the cutout relay ever pulled in which I doubt.

"and if the 2 wires on the generator posts are reversed, what would happen"

It depends on how long things were left connected, but I dont see the cutout relay ever closing whereby battery voltage would have accidentally been connected to the fields. It may be fine with no harm done, I cant say fer sure.

If the poles arent labeled often the ARM is larger????? If the brushes and armature and field windings are all in place and good a good ohmmeter on the R x 1 scale ought to read somewhere (depends on the gennys field windings) around 6 ohms from the Field post to case and much less (maybe an ohm or less) from the Arm post to case. Basically the post with less ohms to case ought to be the Arm post and the other the Field post.

I believe Id use an ohmmeter to determine the genys posts,,,,, wire her up,,,,, ,,,polarize,,,,, , SEE WHAT HAPPENS ????? Gennys run on smoke ya know so if you let all the smoke out shes a dead duck lol

Id say theres a good chance "No Harm No Foul" so far.

Let us all know

John T

One generator terminal post is labeled "A", for "Armature"

It connects to the "ARM" terminal on the voltage regulator.

The other generator terminal post is labeled "F" for "Field".

It connects to the "F" or "FLD" terminal on the voltage regulator.

Note the colors of each wire at the voltage regulator terminals. Then, match the wire colors at the generator to the appropriate terminals.

After confirming the wires are connected correctly, polarize the generator before startup.
