I have a 1970 JD 4000 with a gas engine. I am replacing the intake, exhaust and rocker arm cover gaskets. What is a good gasket sealer that I can use on these gaskets? I purchased my new gaskets from my local JD dealer. I also need to replace the head gasket on my 4010 diesel. Should a sealer be used on the head gasket? If so what sealer should I use?

The aerosol High-Tack Deere sells works very well for intake gaskets and valve cover gaskets. People that glue gaskets on with "black death" or "yellow death" 3M weather-strip adhesive should have the pleasure of chiseling off a gasket that's been glued on with that crap a few times. Especially guys that use it on water-pump gaskets on the front of engine blocks or on pan gaskets. The first time you're in the middle of a corn field on a hot summer afternoon or cold fall morning with a hammer and gasket scraper trying to get a glued-on gasket off, you'll understand why there is absolutely no need to stick a gasket in that manner. I've installed dozens of Deere valve cover gaskets with the spray hi-tack with zero problems. Use new screws, make sure the cover is clean and dry, make sure the gasket surface is flat and not distorted where the screws go through, apply a moderate amount of sealer to the cover surface and the gasket, allow it to dry, then stick the gasket and you're done. Head gaskets should be installed bone-dry, using new bolts torqued to the proper specs in the proper sequence. If the block and/or head isn't flat or the liners are low, a new gasket is a band-aid. Exhaust gaskets should also be installed dry, after chasing the bolt holes out and with anti-sieze compound on new hardware torqued to specs. Same goes for the intake bolts - chase out the holes, use new hardware and torque to specs.

Oh, but Gman, JD has an answer for even that. lol! A little bit of that parts cleaner in the can (red) I think its TY23126 or is it TY23101? anyway it will dissolve just about anything. It would be a good match for the 3M weather stripping. It even removes the old gooey permatex.

Yeah, they have a couple different things that are good at dissolving. Of course some of them also dissolve stuff you don't want damaged, like paint, plastic, rubber etc. And if that gasket has been glued on with that crap for years, forget about ANYTHING just knocking it right off. I know that weather-stripping cement is a popular gasket-sticker among people wrenching on Deeres, both service techs and DIYers, but I sure don't understand why. I don't believe Deere has EVER recommended it. Heck, I used to use it myself. Right up until the day I spent an hour laying under a tractor chiseling a gasket off a pan rail that some idiot had glued to the pan AND to the block. I still use it - on weatherstripping. I have the same opinion of RTV silicone - fine and dandy when used in moderation where it's required, but the guys that put it anywhere and everywhere are clueless.

I use a little pematex gasket sealer around intake manifold gaskets, nothing on exaust, and for valve covers I glue the cork gaskets to the valve cover only, with weather strip adehsive. Install head gaskets clean and dry. Oil the head bolt threads and under the head so they torque properly.

ET Thank you for the information. When you said you use the permatex sealer, is this the form-a-gasket type and if so whitch one do you use? The reason I am asking about gasket sealers, not long after I purchased this tractor the front exhaust manifold gasket started to leak. When I removed the manifold I noticed a sealer (red in color)had been used. When I put it together I hope I don't need to take it apart again. It's planting time and I need this tractor. Thank you again

The red stuff you saw is likely the spray hi-tack I mentioned in my other post. No need for it on an exhaust gasket, but I kind of doubt that it caused the leak. Make sure the manifold sealing surface is good and flat, as well as the head. That old, single-piece manifold could easily be eroded away around the ports or even warped. Work from the middle out when tightening the bolts. Torque will be 35-40 lb.-ft. and it's a good idea to go to about half of that all the way across and then go to full torque. Make sure that the holes are good and clean and that the bolts aren't bottoming out on debris or clogged threads before they clamp the manifold on good.

G/MAN Thank you for the information. I want to do this right so correct me if I am wrong. Using the JD High-Tack aerosol, I attach the gasket to the valve cover only and leave the head side of the gasket dry when installing. The intake, exhaust and head gaskets all are installed dry on both sides of the gasket?

I use the spray on the intake gaskets as well, and usually stick them to the head itself. For the exhaust gaskets, either cut off a couple of long 3/8 bolts in order to make dowel pins or start a bolt on each end, then finagle the gaskets into place behind the manifold and install the bolts through them, then do the holes you had the dowels in.

Just attach the valve cover gasket to the valve cover. G/man remember the old gasket material with the asbestos in it they used to make the rear axel housing and rocksaft cover gaskets out of. They used to weld themselves on with no gasket sealer.

Some of them can get stuck pretty good on their own, but I sure don't help that happen with 3M. Deere has finally seen the light on things like the thermostat housing gaskets used on a bunch of the newer tractors - they're actually a thin steel shim with a non-stick gasket material applied to either side. They pop right off and leave little or no residue behind.

I like the new valve cover gaskets with the steel center and the three vee looking rubber ribs on them.

I've seen those gaskets used on the 300-series engines for quite a while, but as far as I know on the 400-series engines we're still stuck with the plain old cork gasket. The plastic valve covers and "reusable" plastic-frame/rubber-seal gaskets they started using partway into 450-series/6081 production us about the best thing they've come up with yet. They may seep very slightly and attract a little dirt, but I've never seen one leak very badly at all. And I'm relatively sure that those covers could be retrofitted back to most 400-series engines as they seem to be a direct replacement.
