My 41 H has a rebuilt carb and runs very well once it is started. It is a hand crank and can be a real bear to start. When pulled it will start easy. What could I do to fix this.

Check
condition of the valves. It doesn't take much of a leak to cause hard starting on a hand crank tractor. Mine seem to be especially sensitive to a sticking intake valve. Good Luck, Paul

Joe, is the impulse coupling working in the mag? Turn the flywheel and listen for the snap, if you can hear it make sure it snaps when the IMPULSE on the flywheel lines up with the line on the case. (The slot in flywheel will be horizontal with the ground). If that is OK try different throttle settings at start up. Mine starts best with almost No throttle. I set choke, turn it over once, set choke to 1/2,it will start next time over. But they are all different.

Clooney, My mag has just been reworked and she does seem to start better at less throttle, I am using Autolight 388 plugs and they seem to work best. I did the carb and wonder if the float setting could have anything to do with it. Thanks for your reply.

Joe, if it runs good after started, starts better at less throttle (float setting doesn't effect idle much)it doesn't sound like carb. Do check the compression at cranking speed,(specs. are 80#)but that spec. is for warm engine. Might be a little less cold. Also did the timing get set back right after the mag. was rebuilt. I advance mine about 1/4" from stock.Check that the choke valve closes all the way & if there is a little hole in the choke plate install it in the right direction.(I have never tried the choke hole thing but been told it helps)I also can't tell you which way is correct. If you can't find out let me know & I will go out & look at mine(it starts good). DON"T use gas with alcohol in it (it starts harder). If you put a new rotor in the mag. try the old one(if the new one has a longer side contact it will lower the KV that jumps the plug gap(just a thought). Also try stopping it by running it out of fuel(leaves the plugs dry).--Let us know what you find

Did the mag get torn apart and throughlly cleaned or just points and cond. Most generally a tractor with a dirty mag will start better when pulled 5 foot as to hand cranking. The armeture and fields need to be clean, no rust. also the bushings are probably worn and causing the armeture to rub on the fields and not let the impulse to operate correctly. Usually the most problems with Wico C mags
