1937 A fan

Does the fan on a 1937 A have a heat-clutch or something or did something break on mine? Mine has always been solidly hooked to the splined shaft but this afternoon it started spinning freely. The splined shaft doesn't go and the splines aren't stripped, just the outer ring on the fan, and it spins quite easliy. This doesn't seem right so if someone could shoot me in the right direction I would appreciate it.

Thanks

Do you still have the original, rubber hub fan or has it been changed to the later "clutch disk" style fan?

If you can tell me the difference I can tell you what I have. It does hav a a big spring on the shaft for tension.

Having that spring means you have the friction disk type fan mounting. What has probably happened is that the the assembly has rusted fast on the shaft so that the springs no longer can move the aluminum disks closer together to keep the fan in constant contact, and then one or both of the old disks deteriorated, creating a space so that the fan is no longer held fast, so now it turns freely.

You'll likely have to remove the fan shaft, compress the assembly, remove the keepers, somehow convince the aluminum disks to leave the shaft peacably, then free things up and install fresh clutch disks.

O Boy,

Sounds like I have my work cut out for me. Steering shaft, hood, gas tank, radiator?, upper water pipe?.

I'll figure it out somehow.

Thanks

sounds like your spring and clutch surfaces are shot, probably rusted off or something, the only thing you can do is take it apart and look at it.
