1020 not chargeing

Guys,
I don"t usually post on this board because I am not fortunate enough to own John Deere Tractors. I"m trying to help a retired neighbor farmer resolve a problem with his 1020 gas tractor. Won"t charge. He took the alternator off and had it tested at NAPA. They say it"s working fine. Still won"t charge the battery, which is new. When I test the battery terminals with a voltage tester I get about 12.5 volts running or not. I believe it should show about 14 volts if charging. There is a small wire (about 12 ga.) coming off the pos. terminal of the batt. with a connector on it that looks as if it were hooked up to something at one time, but I can"t determine where it went. Don"t know if that is the problem or not. I would certainly appreciate any help I can get to get it back charging.
Thanks,
John

John:
I don't know if the 1020 had an under the dash voltage regulator or if the 1020's came with a factory alternator instead of a generator.

However, I have a 1010 that had defective factory regulator/generator system, which I changed to a one-wire interal regulated alternator configuration.
(I removed the old regulator & generator)

His existing alternator can be easily modified to an internally regulated configuration.

"Simply bolt on the alternator and connect one wire to the hot side of the battery"

Hope this helps,

Osage

Factory altenators had external voltage regulator mounted under dash. Have you checked voltage regulator? Tx Jim

test the voltage going to your alternator.thebig wire on alternator should have constant 12v.withengine on or off.thelittle wire should get 12v as soon as you turn on the key.and yes it should show about 13.5-14v when its charging
