The clutch hasn't worked correctly for a good long time. It grabbed and try as I might I could not fix it. I replaced the discs and most everything else with in the pulley. I pulled the pulley off and was going to check every thing on the back side that didn't look OK. Here is the real problem!! I cannot get the drive gear off in order that I may see the operating sleeve, toggles, dogs and drive pin etc

Thanks in advance for any suggestions or ideas. I have tried every thing that I can think of. Thanks and God Bless---JM

I certainly appreciate the replies to my problem. I am in way over my ears on this but I think I see it now. I have a circular steel tool that will just fit inside the gear and give me something to push against. I believe that there is a shoulder to rest this on and if so we should be OK. Thanks to you all and God Bless--JM

Joe..I agree with the others about needing a good puller and maybe heat to get that gear off. The 70's were noted for that gear "walking" out on it's mating cylinder, which would reduce the overall movement and having good snap on clutch engagement. Are you sure the gear is currently on and properly seated? There should be about 3/4 inch step between the top gear surface and the ridge of the cylinder it pushes onto. Once you get it apart check the dogs and toggles, but also the slide pin and the hole on the operating sleeve that the guide pin goes through. If this is worn it allows the sleeve to twist and your dogs and toggles are no longer perpendicular to the clutch housing. This also causes loss of movement. Finally, check the pins that the bonded clutch disks slide on (open side of clutch housing) If they are corroded or rough, the disks will not move freely and this leads to a jerky clutch action.

I use a 3 jaw gear puller that attaches to my hyd. porta-power this is just the ticket for those stubborn gears !

You may be able to rent one at a tool rental place ? Or if your me in Ohio bring it on over.
