Okay, I will NEVER drive this in California but plan to toss my Catalytic Converter and run 2 1/2 inch duals each with a huge free flow truck muffler so my 1992 Ford 460 FI RV will breathe easier. The air pump has two output hoses that pump air into the converter and my question is at the air pumps output can I just loop those two outputs together so she recirculates or leave them open to atmosphere or plug one or the other or what????? ?? I wanna do what it takes to keep an engine lite from coming on and/or messign up the computer so she runs the same.

PS Id also like to install a K & N or Banks High performance Air Intake System so she breathes free n easy comng in n going out both wooooo hooooo o Ive done so before and picked up an extra 1/2 MPG

I will deny any knowledge of this lol

I'm no fan of the K&N air filters. I believe the engine needs clean air and the K&N tend to pass everything smaller than bumble bees including dust, dirt, sand, and small gravel. That's how they flow so much more air by not stopping much.

They've had some issues when used on diesel engines with high amounts of silicates ending up in oil samples, but a diesel uses ten times as much air per gallon of fuel burned as a gas-burner does, also. I had a K&N filter on a Pontiac Grand Am with the Tech 4 engine from the time it turned 100,000 miles til I quit driving it at 225,000 and it still ran fine, so I don't think it's a big problem. And that car also spent a fair amount of time on gravel and dirt roads.

Of course removing emissions equipment from any pollution-controlled motor vehicle is technically breaking the law, regardless of where you do it at, and more and more states are mandating smog tests, but I'm sure most of us have done this sort of thing, so we'll let that slide. The K&N intake set-up you mentioned is supposed to be good for a "noticeable" increase in horsepower and 1 to 2 mpg both, so I'd definitely look into that. And I believe Banks used to or still does offer exhaust systems for most gas-burner trucks as well as diesels, so you may look into what they sell and try to mimic it. There are also "cat-back" exhaust systems that allow you to maintain the converter and emissions legality and are supposed to be good for some power and mileage gains, and would be closer to a bolt-on deal, but I don't know if they're offered for an RV-type chassis. As for the air pumps, I think I'd just leave the outlets open. Or bypass the pumps entirely, if a shorter belt could be used or whatever. I know what you're talking about on the EFI 460 - my service truck is a '97 F-250 HD 2wd with the 460 and automatic transmission. It's not a rocket-ship by any means, but it actually does pretty good on gas if you can keep it on the highway and not do a lot of stop-and-go driving. I can get around 12 mpg or so, and it'll only drop to 10 or thereabouts if I'm doing the stop-and-go thing. But it has some pretty high gears in the rear-end - it runs well under 2000 rpm in OD at 70 mph. I'm not a Ford man by any stretch, but I kind of like that truck. It's got 170,000 on it and the engine and tranny have never been touched, so it's been a pretty good unit. I'd like to wake it up some with a K&N filter set-up and maybe some exhaust work like you're talking, but I don't know if the boss would go for it or not. Then again, I put an even $100 in it in gas the other morning, so maybe a couple more miles per gallon would pay off quick, lol.

I'm surprised that your converter hasn't plugged already. Yes, you can do as you describe, and it will help---some, but not much. Trouble is, 460's built after Jan 1, 1988 had extremely restrictive exhaust ports to make them pass emissions, which is why what you do downstream of the ports doesn't make as much difference as you would think. Ford used to offer a "460 EFI" Improvement Kit", which basically was a new cam that was pretty radical on the exhaust side to compensate for the small ports, and a 140-degree thermostat to trick the computer into thinking the engine needed more fuel. It did help, the engine was "crisper", would pull better, and would take more spark advance without detonation. This combo, with a K&N filter, in a 1990 F-350 dually, with a 5-speed and 4.10's, would do about 12 mpg if driven like you weren't mad at it. If I had it to do all over again, I'd go with some pre-'88 heads, or an aftermarket head, a set of headers, 3" exhaust, and the K&N filter. The real problem isn't the converter, it's those tiny exhaust ports on the 1988-up engines.

I thought "D3VE" heads had a S#!ty exhaust port, do you mean to say they actually made them worse than D3's!?!?
