What do you think about parting out tractors that should have been parted out be for alot of work was done.I have a 47 GM thats been a pile of <*#* since i bought it.This tractor has needed everything done to it and it still has so many problems that im thinking of letting it go.I cant sell it cause theres nicer looking tractors with alot of better quelites than mine for less money.Ive heard that g parts are selling good.I can buy another tractor thats needs a motor put in it thats a nicer tractor than this thing .But do iwant to go throught the hassle.i have alot of cash in this thing and still more work to do.Your thoughts would be nice thanks .

We"ve one 4020 JD seriously in need of an overhaul. Not sure how many we"ve got around here, though most are in top notch mechanical condition regardless their dirty noses and clothes. They work for us everyday and do that work well. If we sold every last one of them they wouldn"t bring in enough cash to buy one new tractor. And, then when I have to go to a dealer for a part or an implement purchase, I"ve checked out the shops and see fairly new tractors that have set around for months waiting for parts what almost seem unattainable. Odd isn’t it? Thankful we’ve a stable full of Oliver’s for they’re the easiest to work on and find overnight delivery of parts. I’m sure none of them are worth what we have in them, yet none of them can be replaced for what we have in them either. The worst tractor basket case we’ve had was a 4010 JD that should have been scrapped period. It has had so much done to it little by little over its disappointing years, yet now it’ll out last us in the years to come now. I figure tractors are about as individual machine as its present owner. Seems like around here they serve us more than we do them, when repairs or overhauls are done right to the letter.
This is looking at them. Otherwise its each his own. Oliver"s are the working backbones in this Shorthorn country.

We all have a spent money on our toys, Some we can jusify and other not so practual. In the End, think of it like a golf Game ( or some other hobby requiring money). Which is cheaper, I betting restoring the Old Iron especially if your going to use it, that is work it, Train your child or grandchildren, or lower your blood pressure. Clay

Almost no one makes any money properly restoring tractors, at least not their own tractors. If that was your goal or you thought that putting $5000 into a $1000 basket case was going to make it worth $7500, you're misinformed. Most people make that determination before starting the project, or shortly thereafter, and look at the tractor as whole from front to back and top to bottom. Starting into a restoration one component or piece at a time can easily lead to where you are - rebuild the governor and find that there's teeth missing off the bull gears, etc. Some guys like a real "project" and don't care what the cost is to restore it. Some guys want something they can wrench on for a couple of days, slap a coat of paint on and call "restored". To each their own. This is really your decision. If you want to sell it whole or part it out, do it. But be forewarned that completely parting out a tractor, cleaning up and inspecting parts to make sure they're worth selling, advertising those parts, getting them sold and shipping them is going to be a lot of work, too. And you're going to end up with a bunch of stuff that you'll never get rid of at any price. Look around any salvage yard and you'll see what I mean. I'm a big fan of "G"s, and think that pretty much any one that's reasonably intact deserves a chance to live, but I also know that one being parted out can contribute to many others getting a second chance at life.

G/MAN ; Nothing more to add as you really nailed it in that explaination !

Only thing I can do is to reemphasize the part about ending up with alot of stuff left over you never sell and how much work it is to tear one down and keep the parts from getting ruined and keep them stored so as not to rust up. I have been there and done that !!! Once the "goodies" are gone there is still alot of stuff left over. With the price complete tractors are bringing these days it would be close to break even on the few parts that would sell.

Hello 36A,
This is something that you will have to make the decision on. I'm not doing much as far as keeping old machinery running these past 21 years, but when I get out of the service in a couple of years, hopefully I'll be getting to do a complete resto on a Farmall M and a JD 630. I already know that it will cost more than they are worth (especially since there are some thieves lurking around where they are parked in a shed) but the M was my deceased fathers tractor and the 630 was my deceased uncles last tractor before he retired from farming and had sold it with equipment to my father. Good Luck with your decisions whatever it may be.

Jim

I've been in your situation and it's a tough call. Unfortunately, it sounds like you have already invested a considerable amount money & time into this tractor. Hindsight is 20/20 but the decision to part out a tractor has to be made before the first dollar is spent to fix it up. You have several options. I assume you started with the engine, (block, head etc.) These & the sheet metal (if it's decent) will be the easiest parts to sell. The rest will be harder to move and you may end up more or less giving it away or scrapping it.If you can get the majority of your money out of it this way, parting it is a viable option, although unlikely. Second option, park it somewhere out of the way and walk away from it for a while. It's easy to get frustrated with restoring a challenging tractor, but what's the hurry? One way or another if you try sell it as is or part it you will probably take a loss on it, but maybe the relief is worth it, it's your call.

Like a lot of things in life, it's your tractor and your choice. It's NOT for anyone elese to tell you what to do with your property.

That being said, PLEASE save the poor thing!

Just remember there's not enough NOS parts to put all these old tools back together. So in my opinion some must be parted out to put granpa's old tractor in working order.

If you plan to use this tractor for farming this is a bad. Now if it for your hobby to have a GM which were only made for one or two years it might be a good choice.
I have 11 running old tractor and they all cost me something. some too darn much, but I am proud that I brought them bact to life, and still have several dead ones left to bring back to life. A running tractor is a bette choice if you find one. In this hobby, If you want to play you have to Pay My two pennies. Good Luck Ben

Where at in So. Texas are you located at? I grew up in Corpus Christi, we moved to a small farm North East of Waco where I lived for five years prior to joining the service. For the first time since I joined back in 1985 I am living in Texas stationed in Abilene. What are the outlooks for you as far as the TTC is concerend? I hear it's still in the books and possibly a done deal. Depending on the direction it goes, it may come right through the area where the estate farm is and there is more than one person in that area that is a little upset. Take care and have a nice day.

I have more money in all my tractors then they are worth but I know the condition of each one.
The sum of the parts is worth more than the whole tractor. Having your gradfathers John Deere D and your fathers Ford Jubilee your uncles Case 930 priceless.
