I had no intention of making a career on working on this same old clutch but--I've had it off, cleaned it, repained it where I thought it needed and put it back on several times. I even pulled the drive gear and checked that area and all to no avail. When I first put it on and run it, it seemed to be OK but after a bit it is noisy and sounds pretty awful. Today I was checking again, (While the pulley is on the bench.) The big bearing appears to go too far onto the shaft and I find nothing to too stop it. The drawings in the I&T manual show a snap ring and a bearing washer and I have neither on mine. Could this be the cause of all my problems? Thanks in advance and God Bless. JM

You probably know that that bearing only turns when the pulley is at rest and the engine is running. Generally if you have a problem with this bearing such as noise, it goes away as soon as you engage the clutch. There is supposed to be a snap ring in there to keep the bearing in position, though I thought the bushing would keep it basically trapped in place. It would be a good idea to install the snap ring and washer.

Have you checked out the bearing? Does it run smooth, and have you packed it with hi-temp wheek bearing grease? After installation, what exactly happens? Describe the noise, when it starts, and when it stops if at all. Do you idle rhe engine with the clutch engaged or disengaged?
