I have a 602 dozer for a JD 440ICD and am refurbishing the cylinders. My question is does the outer seal have the rubber lip pointing in or out around the shaft. Someone told me it should point inward toward the pressure. I don"t think that is correct because I have looked at some cylinders and it seems to point out. Does anyone have the correct answer?

the outer one that you can see when the cylinde r is together should point out it is designed to wipe dirt from cylinder rod

Joe, I have always been told that the outer seal is a wiper seal to keep the dirt out of the cylinder. So they would point out. The inner seal points inward to keep the fuild in. Thats my thinking.
