I bought a muffler at a farm store thinking it was right for the A I am redoing, but when I got it home it is about three inches taller than the inlet stack. Is this right? The old muffler on the tractor is clearly not right so it is no help.

Farm supply Mufflers look and sound like s..... go to your JD dealer and get the right one . Also leave the baffles alone as they sound original. Take this for what it's worth, I personaly do notlike straight pipes .Put on an old rain gutter down spout and you can hear for yourself.

I liked the idea about cutting out the baffles but I have a better idea if that is the sound you are looking for. Go to a driveshop and get an old driveshaft that has a good ring to it (the better the ring the better the POP!) and have it welded to the proper flange for your tractor. It can be chromed or leave it black, but either way it does make any tractor BARK, and it pisses off the neigbors in town.
Good luck

...and after you get the right muffler from John Deere, cut the very top off and remove the baffle. It'll sound sweeter than anything you can imagine.

I haven't tried running strait pipes yet, but yesterday I put my 2 G's in the barn(snow coming today)so I had to remove air stack and muffler. I left em both running for a few minutes in the barn. They shook dirt out of the rafters that I'm sure has been up there since Noah unloaded his ark. Did a pretty good job of cleaning out my ears to! I like that idea of driveshaft for exhaust stack(read: I am cheap!) but if you ever catch a branch you are gonna be buying an exhaust manifold instead of straitening a stack! Mike

hi,
no it should not be longer than the inlet stack. They were designed to be the same hight. I would try "restoration supply" out of Hopedale, MA. Their phone # is 1-800-809-9156. They should have the muffler that is correct (i hope).
p.s. they also have a free catalog.
Hope i was some help,
chaz
