Just wondering if any of you guys have experienced this problem. Would like to hear your comments before I start looking into the Touch-O-Matic system. Tractor had been idle for years. Got engine running and noticed a rag stuffed in Touch-O-Matic oil filler pipe blew out into the air. The draw bar could be raised or lowered by hand. Decided to restore tractor and arrived at the point to start engine again and check Touch-O-Matic system now filled with fresh oil. Results: Started engine and the draw bar moved to the full upward position; there is no response to the hand control and hydraulic oil is flowing out the filler tube. Any comments appreciated. John

Well Guys, I disassembled the touch-O-Matic finding it very dirty. Removed all valves and found them clean and bright. The piston was in the full-up position and stuck. Filled cylinder with oil and hydraulic ram to push the piston out. Discovered lots of rust on the upper side of the cylinder while the low side was clean. Go figure. I was told this tractor was sitting for years so I'm wondering if moisture was forming on the top of the cylinder while oil and water sat on the lower portion...Anyway I honed it and got it to the point the pistion would slip in freely. Assembled all and started engine. Lift is strong and holds pressure. My overflow at the filler cap problem is still with me. By chance, I opened the petcock above the drain plug and although no oil came from the petcock the owerflow stopped at the filler cap. I repeated that severl times and each time the overflow stopped. Surely, that petcock should not be normally open? I have a new filler cap so air should escape properly. Suggestions anyone? Thanks. John

The rag popping out is likely because of pinhole leaks in the suction line between the pump and the housing. The line goes UP OVER all of the tractor so it does not leak oil out but does leak air in. Oil soon fets a bit frothy doesn't it.

As for not responding to control changes, there are rods (two if it is a dual TOM, only one in single) that through a cam & feelers sense the position of the rockshaft. If the rods are stuck (as in lightly rusted), bent, scored or the follower spring is broken, they don't know what's going on & nothing happens when you move the control lever.

Chances are the rod/rods are stuck in the raise position because of rust. They're not tough to work on.

We had an MT on the farm when I was young. IF I remember correctly, when the tractor was running the arms would not lower unless you had some load on them. I seem to remember that to hook up an implement with the tractor running, you had to push the levers down then pull the arms down by hand. Hope I have remembered correctly.

Hello John,
Dont know how the "M" is set up, but in my 430 there were a couple valves that were "sticky" from sitting for so long. I went thru and loosened everything and it did the trick. Once you get to working on them the hydraulics are not so scary; Good service manual help. Thanks, Dave
