My father is trying to get my Grandmother's property cleaned up and there is a bunch of old equipment out there. This includes an old John Deere engine, which my dad described as a "John Deere 40". It is a hand cranked engine that they used for one season as a power plant for their lumber mill work, and has been sitting ever since. I am hoping to lay claim to it...the crank spins and there is compression and I think it would be neat to restore my Grandfather's
At any rate, I need some help in identifying the engine. I have attached a URL where I have a picture. My dad says it was purchased new sometime in the late 40's or early 50's.

Thanks!

Appears to be a "LUS" Power Unit, which fits the time frame. You'll need a parts catalog, you can order one by calling 800-522-7448.

Maybe an LUC. Never heard of an LUS before.

The "LUS" was the stationary power unit version of the "LUC", and yes they made some. I've seen advertising literature for them, and there are records of their existence.
