I can't steer my old 40 crawler, both sides what can I do or need?

Is there an adjustment. Stopped over to JD dealership and they

won't give me any ideas. They rather pick it up and charge me

an arm and leg.

On the top of the steering clutch housings , there are square sheetmetal covers you can remove..Inside there [with a flashlight] you can view the throwout bearing engage the pressure plate fingers as you pull the lever back..If the machine moves but won't steer when you pull the levers back , chances are the clutch disks are stuck to the steel plates inside the clutch drum..If thats the case a tear-down of the clutches is necessary to remedy the problem..Don't cut corners with parts..If you decide to repair your own clutches, change the steel plates and pressure plate if needed..Any pockets or pitting of the steel components at the friction surfaces will fill up with the organic or asbestos fibers and cause a slipping situation..No matter how much you wire wheel those parts...

There are many things that could be causing the problem. I know others have said this before, but get the service and parts manuals for this tractor. The dealership can get them or you can buy them on EBAY or you can get them direct from Deere. You will save the price of the books many times over. I have had these crawlers for over 35 years and I can tell you that unless you know excatly how to adjust and repair the steering clutches/brakes on these, you will have nothing but trouble.
