I'm working on a rancher's 720 and have to pull the flywheel. It's rather stuck on there with a little bit of ruston the splines (argggh, no flywheel cover for 2 years sitting outside!!). Wondering how to get it off now that the bolts are loose? Wonder how heavy it is? I sure don't like the idea of trying to get it off by hand with aomeone on a pry bar. Guess I'll have to find an engine crane somewhere in the Sierra Nevadas...

Man, I never had a problem getting one loose. Take out the bolts and use an old wood fence post and thump it gently around the perifery a few times. That will rock it loose. I;ve seen people drive chisels in the crotch where it bows to tighten, but my fence post has not failed me.

I just pulled the flywheel off of a gas burner 720 2 days ago. If you have a flywheel puller and attach it by putting bolts with washers through the holes then crank it with the air gun life will be very simple. Be sure to drown it with WD-40 too. If you have a bad back I wouldn't try lifting it either. Just let it fall and watch your toes!

Flywheel stuck ON a 720? Lucky you, most of the time they try to jump off the shaft. New grade 5 or 8 fasteners and a torque wrench are vital for reassembly. Do a search in this forum with "flywheel". What is the project that requires pulling the flywheel?

Crank's gotta come out. Spun a main. However, Engine is still loose. Plan on replacing rod bearings and mains and seals while I am at it- upper half of engine gone through about 3 years ago. Owner didn't have money for lower end at the time.

Only reason I asked the first question is because I have a bad back. It IS a diesel... A very straight tractor... HOWEVER, the owner let a blown headgasket leak antifreeze over time and ate out the bearings... it is sad.

I found your comment about the flywheel being stuck on the crank funny. Too often that we see taper-loks. 'Tis life, I suppose.

Can't you make a puller to go through the holes.
