JD 2955 Tachometer Problem

I have a 1987 2955 with a tachometer that works intermittently. It seems to work a little more regularly during warm weather. However, it usually quits when you need it the most. This last winter it hardly worked at all. Sometimes it quits when shifting the transmission. When shifting through neutral you can hear the relays on the instrument panel open, and the tach quits. It seems like when the electrical load on the instrument panel changes, that can kill the tach, but not always. Other times it quits when you are just looking at it. It seems like a loose electrical connection somewhere. I have worked on the bulkhead connector to be sure there are no problems there. I have run a separate wire from the magnetic pickup on the timing cover to the tach. I can not find any cracked connections on the printed curcuit board for the instrument panel. It seems like there could be a loose ground somewhere that is not carrying the load consistently. However, I can't seem to find anything. The person who owned it before me said it seemed to get worse after they had a new clutch put in.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have been fighting this thing for over a year now.

Thanks,

Thanks to all for your valuable input. I finally got a chance to work on it after baling hay. I did not have access to an oscilloscope, so I used the ohm meter set to ac voltage to check the cam sensor output as recommended by haymaninva. The tach was not working for the first part of my test and later on it started working. So I was able to check it both ways.

With no tach function, there was a steady ac voltage that did not vary with engine speed. Then after getting the engine fully warmed up, the tach started working and the ac voltage increased with engine speed as was recommended. So you guys were exactly right about the tired magnetic pickup.

I had been on JDPARTS and listed the required parts for replacement, which agreed with those recommended by buickanddeere. I had removed the magnetic pickup long ago thinking I would be able to see something wrong, but could not. This time I took it apart.

There is small center cover with the original part number that can be removed after some difficulty. After digging out a fair amount of hard sealer, I found a fine copper wire that was originally soldered to the ground terminal inside. It had continuity to the tach terminal, but no continuity to the ground terminal inside. The wire was so thin I had to use a magnifying glass to work on it. Eventually I got a jumper strand of wire soldered in to complete the circuit. Filled the space with silicon and resealed the center cap. The tach now works like a charm.

Thanks again for your excellent advice. It saved the day.

Mark

put a cam sensor on it , it goes in the front of the timing cover I have replaced dozens of them for this problem, The correct way to check it is with an ohm meter on ac voltage or hertz frequency, both should increase with rpms, if it is erratic you have found your problem, After checking a few I stopped checking them and started replaceing them, saving me a few steps under warranty time. If this does not fix your tach the fuse board needs to be examined with a magnifying glass, if it is ok, it needs to be repositioned in its holder.

Have you had the instrument panel all apart, down to the BARE PC board, and are you SURE there's no cracked solder joints on the PC board?

I've repaired so many of those, it's the FIRST thing I would suspect.

Besides that, install temporary jumper wires to ground the cab, chassis and battery together, and see if that helps... I can't remember if there are any ground straps to provide ground continuity around the rubber cab mounts that could have been disturbed during the clutch job.

we"ve never had a problem with the tach not working at all, but it will stop working occasionally when you first start it in a couple days. the tach needle will get stuck in the "off" position (0 rpm), but if you tap on it like knocking on a door, it works fine.

Hope this might help

The magnetic pickup could be getting tired or has something loose inside. There doesn't appear to be any gap adjustment.
