I need your help and info. I found a 1986 John Deere 1050 4-wheel drive with front end loader for sale. The engine runs great, but tractor does not move at all. The guy who is selling it says that it needs a clutch. How hard is it to replace in these tractors? Expensive? Is it worth the trouble? Could it be something else besides the clutch?

I've got the 2wd 950. It is the same engine without the turbo. That thing sips fuel. I can bush hog all day long before I have to refuel.

I paid 4500 for mine 2 years ago. If you pay him 1000 and put in a couple thousand more for a new clutch, you are still in great shape.

There are shops that will re-line the clutch disk for a mere fraction of the cost of a new unit. That leaves "just" the flywheel & pressure plate. It does seem odd there is zero movement with a "worn out" clutch. Unless the previous operator drove it until it dropped. The tractor should be able to move some in the lowest gears.

$1,000? Hmmmm...

IF..You need a working tractor right now, I'd say pass.

But if you are willing to get dirty and roll the dice a little....And you don't mind a project that consumes your spare time...There should be no way you are going to get burned too badly.

The motor and the tires should salvage out for your investment, and you'll end up with a loader to keep.

Even if the ENTIRE package is totally junk, Where else are you going to get such experience and training for a grand?

It could be only the clutch, however this may just be the obvious and most notible sign of neglect or abuse. You failed to mention asking price considering clutch replacement. We have no way of knowing if this a good or bad deal. I would surmise with out running the tractor at least $1000 off a good running tractor. Knowing Deere that clutch probably $400-500 plus risk of other things. I would be concerned about trasmission and hydraulics. You would think that owner would have repaired if a minor situation?

He is asking $1000 for the tractor as is. It comes with 2 sets of tires. I am just not sure if it's worth it. I understand that it is not an easy fix (if it was, he would fix it himself). I am not a machanic, but give me a book with pictures and the great help & advice from the people on this website and I can do it.
