My brake adjusting bolts are frozen inside and half broken off outside. The shoes are minimally worn and are working at this time. How long can I expect to use this tractor before the brakes are no longer effective and no adjustment possible? I'm doing a full restoration and I know I should just work to get the bolts out, but I am so close to getting it running I just want to get it to our show in August.

You can also tap on the end of the adjuster with a hammer this will help break some corrosion off of the threads.

Forget the deadlines and do it right the first time. Brakes are very important ! And it will require some heat to free them up.

I'd go ahead and fix those adjusters before you paint. When they are stuck hard enough to break the adjuster about the only way to procede is to completley dissassemble the brake and remove it from the tractor. Heat that area around the adjuster until cherry red and It should turn out for you.

Note: It does turn out toward the tire of the tractor not toward the transmission case.

If theyre even half way adjusted properly n working okay now and arent dragging closed and assuming its use is for light duty and shows n parades, it should be a longgggg ggggg gggg time before the adjuster bolt ever needs turned in. Id keep the pedal exercised so the internals and cams n pins n springs dont sieze up. Its when youre working them hard with a lot of hard lock up turns and over the road trips they would finally need adjustment. Ive always been able to remove those big bolts using heat n a few choice words now n then, but of course that wrecks any nice paint job grrrrr rrrrr rr. Ive also had luck (the ones that arent broke off) freeing them up without heat by using a lot of shocking hammer blows back n forth n back n forth out on the end of a big wrench as opposed to any hard dead pull and lots of PB Blaster or Grease or oil or other snake oil.
