John Deere 2010. What's the story?

I keep hearing that these were a total piece of junk. I'm still trying to help a friend find a tractor to use (his first tractor).

I found a 2010 gasser that looks really sharp, but maybe it's spent its whole life in the shop based on what I'm hearing about that model.

The serial number is RU 47468 which I guess makes it a 1964. Were the later models debugged enough to be trustworthy?

Take a detour to the link below to see some photos I snapped. Tell me what kind of transmission that is. I don't see any markings showing what gear a fella is in. I see three levers on the dash, one on the left of the steering wheel, one on the right of the steering wheel and one below the steering wheel. What do they all do? I know the two levers on the far right control the loader.

What should this tractor be worth? I don't know the asking price yet. I don't know if I'll even call or if I'll let my friend make the call. I just want to know if I should even recommend this machine to him period.

Thanks!

I would not get a 1010 or 2010 for a beginner. I think these are becoming the new collector models. Parts are not going to be the easiest to get. I have heard all the "junk" stories and I have worked on a few of them. I don't think they are junk because you see an awful lot of them still out and running around ! They are not near as nice to work on as other JD models and I consider them JD's IH as some of the goofy stuff resembles IH tractors. Like the steering shaft through the rad. and fuel tank and poor brakes.

Find a 1020,2020 300 ind. 400ind. models or even newer 2040 etc. you will be far better off. Or if a taller model won't be a problem go with a 3010,3020,2510,2520 these are great !

Lemme tell you something right now...

That swept-back front axle is the worst thing you'll ever use for a front end loader. It's so unstable. Trust me, I have a 2155 with SB axle and a loader, and it turns too fast and the load practically balances on that front axle. SUCKS!

"Tell me what kind of transmission that is."

---> Synchro-Range

"I don't see any markings showing what gear a fella is in."

--->The shift pattern decal that should be next to the lever is missing. If you have ever driven a synchro DEERE, this one shifts pretty much the same.

"I see three levers on the dash, one on the left of the steering wheel,"

--->Lever for remote hydraulic couplers at rear of tractor

"one on the right of the steering wheel"

--->Gear shift lever

"and one below the steering wheel."

--->Throttle lever

The question is... where's the 3-point lever? On the ones I've seen, it's next to the hydraulic remote lever.

I know of two that are still running, a gasser, and a diesel, that are used for haying every year, and seem to do pretty well, but you always hear of others that were ALWAYS in the shop.
