The other day we had a guy call our dealership with a question about his 50 . He had just changed the oil and filter and now the tractor would not start. So one of our guys went to his place to check it out. We checked the ignition, gas, and air intake. We noticed it wasn't geting any fuel because there was no oil presure. We removed the filter and found it had been over tightened and broke the cast houing on top of the oil filter casing. Is this something that happens quite often? This is the first time seen this. The gentleman seemed rather surprised that us young fellers could figure it out and fix the problom. I told him that I had a colection of them and knew quite abit about old tractors and equipment. Remember to be nice to us young fellers we have alot to learn, thats why I like this forum so much.third party imagethird party image

Of the five old two cylinders I have restored, two of them had the problem you described - overtightened oil filter bolt that broke casting on top of the filter housing. Probably why they were parked and not run any more.

The first tractor that I ever drove was a 1944 John Deere B , I was 7 years old and we were digging up potatoes. The first tractor that I ever bought was a 1939 John Deere A, I had a hard time starting it since I was just a little fart. I have been bitten by the bug ever since. I have been around John Deere tractors my whole life.

I got the bug when I was about 13. I started fixing up stuff.

I fought the stereotypes too ! and believe me alot of old people don't know stuff either ! I'm getting "older" now too and have more experience to draw from ,but my memory isn't near as sharp as it used to be. When I was young I practically had the whole H parts book memorized.

I'm 14 and I've got two tractors, a 1943 Farmall H, and a 1949 John Deere A. Heres a pic of the A since this is the JD forum.

My first project was a '48 "A", #595751. Rings/valves/rods/tank cleaning, radiator recore/carburetor tear down, clutch work/Powr-Trol o-rings/patch tubes/generator overhaul, and anything else it needed to bring it back to life the summer of '68 after sitting under a willow tree for 9 years. We used it for regular farming operations right after that.

I was 14 and I did the work, Dad bought the parts, and he sat on a bucket and watched me as I struggled. I laid a 2x6 on the right-front frame so I could walk up the plank, put the hood under my arm and lift it over the muffler, and carry it back down. We did not cut hoods!

I remember that the gasket set was $5, the rings were $10, and a brand new head, less valve guides, was $125.

Earned spending money through college fixing them up to resell, or fixing up the neighbors stuff. There was always something waiting for me when I got home after a couple of weeks away. The locals all knew I had been to the auction at Archbold when a semi full of clunkers came in our drive and unloaded them in the barnyard. I wish now I had pictures of all of them. Since then I have always had an old tractor or two or four or more around.

BTW, I think 35 is a bit OLD for a collector.....if you're just now starting :)
