Recently purchased JD 14T in fair condition. Found out that needles were hanging on knotter assemblies. Broke needle lift arm. Replaced needle lift arm and adjusted needles to increase distance from knotters. Reset timing on the baler according to the manual. All parts appear to work while running the baler by hand, except the needles will not return to home position and knotter assembly will not catch (lock into place). Have adjusted lift arm. Any ideas?

Thanks to all of you for your advice on the needles. Did some field tests last Saturday and the needles were returning to home position with PTO momentum. Having trouble with knots, the knots are being formed but the pieces of twine are pulling apart immediately. This leaves a partial knot on one and the other has pulled through. Any thoughts?

The actual lenth of the needle lift arm is ajusted with the knotter tripped and the needles run all the way up through the knotters. There is a measurement or they go past somthing at the right time. I don't remember exactly but the operators manuel will tell you. The needles will not lock in the home position when you turn it over by hand but should under power, if they still don't the needle brake could be a little loose alowing the needles bounce back when they hit the lock.

Could be the needle brake is rusty from non use. Sand it off or loosen the brake pads for a while until the brake disk cleans up.

If you are cranking the flywheel by hand, I experienced the same symptom on my 14T....with the tractor turning it at idle the mechanism had enough momentum to go to its normal position.

You might try it hooked to the tractor. That drove me nuts until I hooked up the pto and ran it that way.
