620 - No power under load

My brother has a 620. Starts and runs great except when you put a load on it. Even driving up a small hill. Sounds like it starts to miss and barely keeps running. My first thought was that it wasn't getting enough gas and to open the load screw a little. The next thing may be a carb overhaul. Then I thought that the governor may not be working properly. Any other suggestions before we start trying things. Thanks.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I will pass them along. Wish it was sitting here so I could play with it. He's had two old JD mechanics look at it and they say it is fine. Just refuses to run right with any type of load on it. Not fine in my book.

John,

Our 620 was acting like that too. It was water in the fuel from condensation. Replacing parts in the automatic fuel shutoff is not a bad idea if you end of draining the tank.

Before you get too carried away with replacing parts and turning screws make sure you are getting good gas flow to the carburetor. Take the drain plug out of the bottom of the bowl then hold down the override on the oil pressure shut-off. Did you get a nice stream of gas for 15 seconds or so? If not you need to look into the screen on top of the sediment bowl and make sure you dont have trash in that shutoff blocking gas flow. Be sure to set that needle back where it came from. Generally speaking there is no need to change carb settings except maybe for minor adjustments to compensate for climate change.

If all this gas stuff checks good pull yourself a spark plug and put it back on the end of the wire and have someone crank the engine over for you while you ground the plug against a good ground. Watch that plug for fire. Was it blue? Was it consistent? Does the other side prove the same? If in fact you find that you dont have good fire start working your way backwards by removing the plug and inserting a screwdriver into the wire and grounding against the frame, then look to the cap, rotor, and points. If you go back far enough you will find the problem.

You can usually find where to start looking with these two checks. Some basic troubleshooting will shave you some time and lots of money. You've just gotta use your noodle to think.

If all of this proves good then you could need a tappet adjustment, but I cant help you with the specs on that cause I dont have a tech. manual for 620/630.

John- You should also check the spark plugs & wires. I use AC 87 or Auto Lite 388 in mine. Use only solid wire spark plug wires, not automotive type wires. Check the fuel auto shutoff bowl. Make sure there is a steady stream of gas to the carb.

My uncle had one giving him fits once and all it turned out to be was the little rubber seal in the automatic shutoff bowl was staying stuck to the top and not riding down with the plunger.

Worth taking a look.

That's funny we all replied at exactly the same time. What are the odds?
