4010 diesel injector issue

I've got a 4010 that lopes at idle and smokes a good deal. If I open it right up it tends to run well and it clears up most of the smoke.

It's also making oil (extra 2 or 3 quarts in 25 hours of use so I'm changing it) and had bad batteries for a month so spent long periods (maybe 1/2 hour at a time) idling in the field when normally I would have shut it off. So I figured maybe I had an injector that wasn't spraying well at idle and was causing the roughness, smoke and extra oil.

I loosened the high pressure line fittings at the injectors. the third one from the rear of the engine did not make the engine fall on its face like the other five did.

Is it possible for this injector to be causing me these troubles? and if so how do I remove it because it doesn't want to come out too easy.

Could also be a dilution problem from a faulty lift pump or the injection pump shaft seals are shot.
Pull the injector first and have it checked out.You can sometimes use a crowfoot prybar or a tire iron to pry the nozzles out, But rotate the injector while prying and don't pry too hard. Give it a liberal coat of grease when reinstalling the nozzle.I would pull all six and have the others checked since #4 is probably bad.An old milker inflation brush with the small end cut off makes a good tool to clean the bores in the head.

Low compression in that cylinder (due to cylinder wall and/or piston ring troubles or even valve problems) will also cause problems with "missing" and oil dilution.

Ornery injectors sometimes have to be "pulled" with an attachment for a slide hammer that screws into the injector.

Thank you!

does the tool attach in place of the slotted screw I see on the top of the injector?
