Well what should I do about this? There is a corner broke off right at the edge of the cam surface on this 730 steering worm. Is it repairable, runnable, or junk? Everything else about the part seems quite serviceable.

I would not worry about it. I have reused a bunch that looked like that. For the most part, if the steering is working right the pin should not hit the shoulder. As it moves up or down the ramp the pin causes the sleeve to move the valve for left or right turning and that should happen before the end of that little ramp. The most pounding on that shoulder would be turning without the engine running.

Well, I had the same problem with a 630. The worm went right back in there like it was. At $350 for a new one (virtually nonexistent anyway), I will take away 1 percent out of my 100 percent restoration.

Sure, it gets a little clicky with it in there, but it still steers.

I wish $350. I checked on JD parts web site and it was $600. Ouch!

That's a very common problem on the "improved design" that was no improvement. Look very closely in and around the keyway for cracks. If not cracked then I'd have the corner built back up with some really hard rod. I then use a dremal and grinding points and hand fit it to a new pin so it fits in there and is supported all around and not just on the corner like the originals were that break. You have to partial assemble the worm and hand fit everything equally accross the groove for smooth operation. The surfaces of the cams usually need some smoothing up too.
