I have a 34 A that I reassembled from parts. It had been completely disassembled by the prior owner. It has no oil pressure. In doing a diagnostic evaluation I unhooked the line that feeds into the oil line body ( where all the lines come out to go to their respective places) and put an air nozzle at 20 psi to see if the red head goes up. I get an air leak from the side of the oil filter body. Is this a vent or is this "can" ruptured and causing the lack of pressure. How exactly does the oil get in and out of the oil filter assembly? I really can"t see where the air leaks out of the oil filter body but I don"t want to disassemble it all to find out this is normal. Thanks

I would like to have an email adress or phone number for Havvey. I am in need of a red topped oil pressure plunger for a 35 A JD. Thanks. VH (puter novice)

Below is a copy of an earlier posting I made on this subject. Hope it helps.

If you go the the archives on this board and word search (John Deere 34 35 A B oil pressure) you can read about 55 other good contributions on this subject. These side mounted pumps are fussy and have made the discussion board often over the years.

I have a similar A (417034) that had the same problem shortly after I got it. I took it back to the company that sold it to me which also has a big JD salvage yard. I worked with the owner and mechanic to slove the problem. Both are very good with JD 2 cylinders.

With my pump and a salvage pump side by side, this is what we found: Slits to allow the oil flow between the gears and the cover had some build up which was cleared. The plunger was pitted bad on mine and some on salvage pump. Polished and used the best plunger. Spring behind the plunger was very weak on mine compared to the salvage unit. Used the stronger spring.

Like the gears, there is no gasket available either. We made the gasket from THIN stock taking care that the tapped out gasket had no imperfections. (took two tries)

Disassembly and reassembly is tight behind the flywheel, but can be done. We chose not to remove the flywheel.

There have been no further problems. My oil pressure pin indicator pops up immediately in all weather, engine temp, and engine speed conditions. No overfilling necessary. We felt the weak spring and plunger condition was likely the problem.

I agree with others that the newer pumps are a much better design.

Good Luck,

Mark

I don't remember for sure on one that early ,but most all other ones have a relief valve inside of that housing and you can adjust the oil pressure there.

The oil pump has new gears. Is there a vent hole in the oil body cannister? Hou can any pressure build up if this is not a closed system?

We had the same problem a few years back. After we removed the new type paper oil filter it worked fine. Since then we installed the original brass type filter & still has good pressure.

If the oil lines are hooked right try taking the cover off the oil pump and packing the gears with grease. Worked for me an a 1935 a.

Good luck Doc

If you have one of those red head needles and a oil pump under the flywheel there was some issues with them. you will need a book to show the oil lines and there run (it is different) than the later ones. My problem was worn gears, of course any bad fittings or pipes will cause problems
