JD 2510 stalls

I’m running a JD 2510 gas, mostly for mowing and clearing brush. I’ve had the tractor for about 2 years. Over all, I’m pleased with its performance.

My problem is that the engine started to stall or cut-out about 6 months ago.

The engine starts easily enough. It runs well while traveling both uphill and on level ground with or without a load, with the engine either warm or cold.

These are the conditions for the stall:

Hydraulic fluid is warm. The engine does not stall when the fluid is cold. The engine does stall often once the fluid is warm. (It also seems that the hydraulic pressure drops when the fluid is warm.)

It seems to stalls during a speed transition…Turning to go slightly downhill or moving from level ground into a hole or depression. It does not stall when the tractor slows when going uphill. Also, it does not stall when the tractor turns onto a steep downhill, when the rpms are high and the engine compression is holding the tractor back. I mow rather hilly land and the tractor stalls often.

The recovery is simple: Put clutch in, within seconds there’s black smoke from stack and the engine recovers. The engine starts easily when completely stalled.

I’ve thoroughly cleaned the carburetor and adjusted the float. Replaced the fuel filter. I've also replaced the ignition’s electronics including the plugs and wires.

I hope that these symptoms indicate a solution.

I’d appreciate any info or advise.

Thanks in advance.

Keith

Does it make any diffrents if the fuel tank is full or empty? There could be a loose inlet or outlet chek valve in the transfer pump.

As you turn to go downhill, could the float be sticking to the bowl? How sloppy is the pin and the eyes in the lever? If there is a drain plug (should be ) put in a barb and a piece of clear tubing so you can watch the fuel level.

Yes, I suppose it could be the float. The float used to stick when the tractor was not running. I had to tap the side of the carb otherwise gas would leak. The sticking stopped after I cleaned the carb and adjusted the float. However, it may not be right enough for smooth operation.
My local JD dealer has a float needle and seat for about $50. Since I do not want to throw good money away, I may just get a new Zenith carb and be done with it.

Thanks again for your info. I believe, at this point, that my problem is in the carb.

Black smoke during recovery? That's unusual.

Replace the float needle and seat. It is likely worn from many hours of vibration. That was the only advice I was able to extract from the nearest JD dealer's gas engine expert. He refused to talk until I'd replace float needle and seat (which I had in a sack in my hand at the beginning of the short conversation).

Then check the carburetor inlet screen. There's one on the inlet elbow that is often overlooked that eventually gets blocked with varnish and dirt to cause fuel starvation.

One presumes the plug wires are copper, not carbon.

Yeah, black smoke..Like it was flooded.

Thanks, guys, for the info. I can replace the float needle and seat easy enough. I didn't know about the inlet screen. Will check. Will also check the plug wires. I believe thay are copper, but not sure.

I'm not sure how to check the fuel transfer pump. Is it the fuel pump?

Thanks again.

Yes the transfer pump is the fuel pump. Its conceivable it's pressure regulator could be failing and its putting out too much pressure, but most are made so thats extremely unlikely.

I wonder if the fuel transfer pump is acting up ? Our 4020 started acting weird and the pump was old (about the only thing not touched before )I pulled it off and it didn't seem to be pumping right. New one cured it.
