1936 B magneto question

I recently have started restoring my 1936 B and the magneto was removed years ago so I am looking for a good wico mag. I know their is a long lug and a short lug style. Can the drive lug be swapped from one to another. I think a long lug is what I need. What should I look for an "X" or a "C" style mag or does anybody out their have anything for sale? If you have a fairly thick wallet and can find one, a Fairbanks Morse magneto was also used on that year model and they look sharp...CalJim

I second what John T says on the Wico X mag. Although not "correct" it is a much better mag especially if it was a "hot" coil in it. Replacement parts also tend to be less expensive.

I wouldn't worry much about the "correct police" so far as using a type X (or XH) magneto on your tractor because Field Service Bulletin 159-S (1-15-1948) legitimized use of these magnetos all the way back to the Series GP tractors.

Thus it is the genuine John Deere replacement for a Type C magneto. As for which impulse drive cup you should use, consult with Robert's Carb, either by phone or a visit to their website (below). John T is on the mark telling you that a drive cup giving you a 25-degree lag angle in place of the original 35-degrees is best. So if you have a choice, choose the 25-degree cup.

I might add here (in my humble opinion) that for casual (like parades) use, any of the drive cups (25, 30 or 35-degree) should serve you okay. They worked on regular gasoline back in the 30's and there isn't any reason they won't do it today.

You are right on the long-lug version being the one you will need. (PatB)

Pat, Im glad to see others agree on the use of a 25 degree advance drive cup for gasoline. From what Ive read and heard n figured out the 35 degree cup was intended more for use when the slow burn low octane distillate or drip fuels were more prevelant. At such relatively low RPM and the low compression tractors and gasoline used today I see absolutely NO reason for a 35 cup (too much advance in my opinion) although as you say, she will still perform adequate for our light duty parade use. Unlike Duane, when I use a 25 degree cup I set up my start impulse timing and then dont even mess with a timing light to see where shes run timed at provided she perfroms okay.

John T -- Have you ever made a connection between the change from 35° to 25° BTDC (running timing) and the change in physical location of your magneto? I refer here to the statement made that the magneto looks dorky when adjusted with its topside nearly all the way to the rear! In the early days, the magneto would have been more straight up! John,
25 deg drive cups with long lugs for a Wico are pretty hard to find items. Wico advertised them for the D (which has a narrower drive lug), and I just ran into my first one for an unstyled A, B, G a few days ago. Neither are still available. 25 deg short lug drive cups are common.

If I had my "druthers" Id opt for an X Model mag as they have a bearing where the C has a bushing,,,,, ,,capable of producing more spark gap energy then a C,,,,, ,,,,easier to get parts such as the "hot" coil,,,,, ,,and its NOT something (C or X or FM etc) the Correct Police could give you any real bad time over even if its not the exact original. Yes the drive cups are interchangeable (depth and advance angle) and Id use a 25 degree cup as I think 35 is too fast for gasoline only (like we usually burn today versus distillates) engines.
