I have a twenty ton press on my 70 piston right now and it ain't budged.I have brake fluid soaking in there,but nothing is happening.What now,another block?

I purchased a 1952 G and a 1949 JD GW about 10 years ago that were stuck. The GW was the first tractor that we tried to get the pistons loose.
We tried coke, John Deere multipurpose spray, Kroil oil, Big mall with block, lots of heat, and finally a 20 ton press which finally broke the pistons loose but breaking the press, which wasn't safe.

What we did with the 1952 G to free the pistons from the block was to use hydraulic pressure from a tractor. First remove the head and block from the tractor. Take one of the spark plugs and remove the porcelain and weld a 1/2"x 4" pipe nipple to the base of the spark plug. Screw this adaptor into the spark plug hole. Use 1/2" hydraulic hose to connect to the tractor and to the adaptor on the block. Close the valves on the head. Put head gasket and head back on block and torque the head to specs. We placed the engine on the ground outside and backed up our John Deere 4640 to the engine and hooked up the hose. At low idle the hydralic oil from the tractor pushed out the piston at a slow steady pace and the piston just dropped out. We did the same thing with the other piston. The hydraulic oil is a steady even pressure on the entire area of the piston. Unlike a press or a hammer and block, which we have tried with little succes.

This way didn't ruin the pistons or the block. Only thing that you loose is a spark plug and some hydraulic oil. Which is cheaper than replacing the block and pistons. This method does work and it is alot safer. I hope this helps you. E-Mail me if you have any questions. Good Luck!

ihave had luck putting diesel fuel in the cyls. let them soak for a while then use a block and a hammer and hit the top of the pistons. i used a sledge hammer on mine.

i have used pure antifreeze on stuck/rusted parts in the past and it seems to do as good as flamable materials and a lot safer. just my 2.5 cents worth!

Jack, it sounds like you have a really stuck one there. One thing to try- leave the brake fluid in there and light it (yes it will burn). You will have to use a steady flame to light it (such as a torch) and you will think it will never go, but it eventually will and will make a nice, gentle blue flame. You will want at least about an inch of fluid over the piston. This is to keep the piston cool. This will help the fluid penetrate around the piston. Hope this helps. Mike

I'd remove the brake fluid and replace it with Kroil from Kano labs. Then use a hammer to vibrate the piston.

I have unstuck pistons a couple of ways #1 was to leave block on tractor.But that wouldn't have worked on yours #2the block and hammer way ,but usually ruins the piston especialy alum.ones #3 Since the pistons are probably not going to be reusable you can bust them out starting in the middle #4 With the pressure of the press remove the brake fluid first then take a torch and heat down in the water jackets some alittle heat goes a long ways with that much pressure #5 I haven't tried this but it should work in theory take the block out side fill both cylinders with charcaol and lite this should heat the cylinders enough to break the rust.I really don't know where the brake fliud idea came from but I've heard it too ,but to think about it a little if it was a good of penatrater you couldn't keep it in your brakes!!!!! !!!!! !!!!! !

Hi:
I've had luck with the brake fluid. Did you remove the ridge and hone the cyclider above the piston and push from the bottom? The cylinder will be tapered from wear with the largest size toward the top, so if you press from underneath the pistin will be loosening as it is pressed giving room for the loosening rust to roll. You might need to weld up some kind of a cradle that will rest on the wrist pin bosses to give you something to press on. The wrist pin bosses should be able to take a steady press as this is the pressure they are designed to take.

I would suppose by your post that the block is sitting vertical. then what I would try is to fill the block water jacket with hot water and then heat the block carefully with a torch to get the block to expand. the block should expand faster than the piston and might release the piston.I would also remove the brake fluid and replace it with white vinegar
