I am wondering if there is anyone or place to get a new serial number plate for a 1948 styled D.
My father passed away in 1974 and mom sold the D for 100.00 to a local rancher who later also passed away and this tractor was left to rot out in the pasture. As I grew older, I tried and tried to get her to sell me the tractor with no luck, so I went and tore the serial number plate off of the tractor and then a couple of years later she sold it to me minus the front wheels that were stolen out of the pasture. I now have a tractor I want to restore and have the plate with the holes all ripped out so would like to buy a replacement if at all possible. Any help or information will be appreciated very much.

There is a place in Mason City (Iowa, I beleive) that can help you. I beleive it's called D&G engraving. This is one of those situations that I feel a reproduced tag would not be a problem. Could be a HUGE can of worms though to some people.

The place in Mason City is called D&D Sales. Not long ago they received a friendly visit from a couple young men in business suits who claimed they represented John Deere. They quickly encouraged D&D to get out of the serial tag business for John Deere tractors. From what I understand, the visit was brief! (PatB)

Pat, I wonder what law they were considered to be breaking?

I certainly dont agree with making up a SN for your tractor, but if the original is available to be read, or the original bill of sale with the SN why would a company making reproductions be wrong according to Deere?

I could see more of a fuss if Deere made one that was like the originals, but it sounds as if they are quite different.

What do you think about it all?

You can get a new one from John Deere- they dont look the same they have a bar code on em. BUT mine was free, just have to fill out some paper work and then wait for it.

They are black and silver with a bar code on top then the model number followed by the serial number- same size as your old one. You'll have to buy new rivits for it as well.
