I don't know how many were made but I own one and so does my brother. They both work good for us.

I have one also, (that makes 3) My guess would be about 1000 were made, only available from 1969 on and it was an expenive option. Like others have mentioned they dont pull like a mechanical setup would but it does help you out some. Mine is powershift with a full M&W turbo kit (turbo, oil pan, fan and radiator), sweet tractor for chopping haylage especially if the field is a bit "damp". I turned down an offer of $20,000 for mine this spring.

We called them "squishy boxes" because they acted like an automatic transmission, and often the hydraulics failed.

They're about as rare as MFWD, but not as desirable as MFWD is.

My guess is a few thousand.

The HFWD is not nearly as rare as the MFWD, since the 4020 was never made with MFWD from the factory. That being said, yes there are some tractors out there that are MFWD. I have seen 3 of these, one here in Central Michigan, one in West Michigan and one in Northern Wisconsin. I kick myself for not buying the one 4020 in WI, it was for sale for 8500 back in '93. The research I have done has indicated that the MFWD was an aftermarket setup made by Elwood, the same company that made the front wheel assist units for IH at the time. I have also been told by an old time Deere parts counterman that the 4025 was a model made either in Mexico or South America, and was essentialy a MFWD 4020, but I have never seen or been able to verify this info.

Not many, and many of those were replaced with plain front ends after the hydraulic parts failed.
