I have a 1937 B serial # 36943 and I was wondering if anyone has a production register and will look it up and see where it was shipped, wheels, and special equipment if any. Thanks.

Nick

I have read all the post and see nothing wrong with sharing the following information. B tractor serial number 36943 was built 4-2-1937 and was shipped 4-3-1937 to Bloomfield, Neb. It was equipped with 48inch rear skeleton wheels and cast iron lugs. It apparently had front steel wheels because it had 1.5 inch guide bands.

Thank you for information, one of the other guys who replied sent me an email with the information also. There is nothing wrong with this. The Two Cylinder Club has published this book and the information is out there for everyone to see. Thank you for being down to earth unlike everyone who has disagreed with this subject.

This is an interesting post, two cylinder club sold this book to people, and it is funny how some think that they can't tell anyone what is in it? or think you can get in trouble for doing so?

There is no such thing as a book that can't be shared with others...or quoted out of, but copying the book thats another story thus where the copywriting laws apply...

I to got a email from Two cylinder J.R. hobbs for giving out some 30 series info, I don't know if he his word had any merrit to it, but I decided it wasn't worth either way. But I agree that if the copy right belonged to anyone, it should belong to JD

As a person who has provided information for single requests from the Production Registers published by the Two Cylinder Club, I do not believe I am doing anything illegal. The information is published in the open literature for the unstyled B, unstyled G, and 30 series and therefore available to share. The only restriction stated in the Registers is one cannot xerox, scan, etc. the info without written consent and that is designed to prevent someone from copying them and reselling them.

I suspect one reason Two Cylinder quit publishing the volumes was the likelyhood that in the long run the revenue captured by selling the research for an individual tractor was greater than that received from selling the volumes. The nature of the information in the Registers is pretty specialized, and most owners likely own only a few tractors in each volume. So the tendency was for a club to purchase a volume for use by the members, or collectors asked around and found out who own them. As I understand it, the Registers are sold out and no longer available.

I believe it is fine to share any published information as long as credit is given to the author. An example is J.R. Hobbs nice series of books on the various Deere tractors - these are also copyrighted to prevent reproduction, and the information contained in them is free to share when answering questions on this board.

From a legal standpoint, it doesn't matter that you believe it to be just fine---read the statement concerning copyright on page 4. Message boards are considered a form of electronic reproduction. And no, it is not "fine" to share published information as long as credit is given the author.

Unfortunately, It is also true that people claim copyright to things that cannot be copyrighted, and claim that copyright gives them rights they do not have. As an example, you cannot copyright the phone book, because it is just a list of numbers and names. There is nothing original about it. It could be argued that the information in the production register is similar to a phone book. It is just a list of what they found in the Deere records. Even if the register can be copyrighted, there is nothing in copyright law that would prevent you from conveying the information in the book to someone else. The Two Cylinder Club may not like it, but really, there is nothing illegal about it. Now if you started making PDF"s of the book and sending it around the web, you certainly could get in trouble for that.

My two cents.

Kurt

Im not trying to be a smart@$$ here, but how is answering a question here with information from a book different than if someone were to go to their local public library and check the same book out, free of charge, and read the information? Or instead of answering the question here; saying "Hey, I will see you soon (at a show or whatever), I will let you borrow my book."

Then also, giving someone a torque spec. out of a IT manual is wrong?

Hey, you have done it too. You gave the last number of a 420 tractor. You had to get that from someplace. Isn't that copyrighted too????? ???

Duane,

I agree that there is nothing illegal about quoting information from a reference book, or any book for that matter. Copyright law includes provisions for fair use, which this certainly would be. Furthermore, copyright law protects the particular expression of an idea or information, not the information itself. So reading the information in the production register, and relaying the information in your own words is a new expression and is not covered by the original copyright.

If this was not the case, all research and creative work would grind to a halt. So if it was me I would feel very comfortable relaying the facts from the production register. Just use your own words, and attribute the source.

Kurt (I am not an expert in this, but I am interested in copyright matters)

Duane, I feel as you do but I sure got my wrist slapped by them a few months ago when I posted a reply from my 30 series register to a request like this one.

Copyright is held by Two- Cylinder. They spent a lot of money and time and want to protect there investment.

Ever heard of copyright violation? That is copyrighted information, and yes, people have done it, but they broke the law in doing so.
