I was wondering how much work is involved to change a h without a pump to add one. I have a plow with a cylinder and am looking at an h that doesnt have hydraulics. I know I would have to buy a pump but is that all? Thanks

How important to you is it to have an original looking tractor? If your tractor doesn't have a generator on it, with a little modification it wouldn't be too much trouble to rig up a hydraulic pump in place of the generator. This would give you live hydraulics, with position control. With a little creativity most of the hoses and oil tank could be hidden, and the right choice of a valve could make the addition look original to the untrained eye. Good luck with your project.

Aaron, as 430WLPG stated below, it isn't too tough to add a pump. The picture shows the Power Lift unit that was available for the H. It's a self-contained unit, consisting of reservoir, pump, and valving.

If your tractor is S/N 27000 or newer, the swap is quite straightforward, except for fussing with the fan gear engagement. (The left-side governor cover, replaced by the Power Lift unit, is shimmed against the governor housing to locate the left governor shaft bearing, and that establishes gear mesh settings.) The later tractors (after 27000) were furnished with the longer governor shaft necessary to engage the Power Lift. Earlier tractors needed to have the shaft replaced, and that can be a lot of work because of all the items that must be pressed off the old, short shaft, and re-pressed onto the new shaft.

The H Power Lift is a single-acting system, and is pretty much "full up or full down". It wasn't designed to stop during the lifting stage, so if you are looking for precision control from a hydraulic system, you would be disappointed in the performance of the H Power Lift.

That would be what I would want to add would be the powertrol pump. I have a 1 bottom mounted plow with a cylinder I bought so I would have to by an h to fit it. I would like to put the plow on an H but the one I am looking at doesnt have the power trol. It is a 41 but not sure of the serial yet. Thanks for your reply

If it wasn't for having to change out the governor shaft to have a stub shaft sticking out the side of the governor for the pump to run on it wouldn't be too bad, you would basicly need the governor, pump and all to just swap , that would be the easy way if you would call it easy
