I have a 34 A gas tank that has a large dent in it and am trying to repair it. Someone suggested using some type of bladder or inflatable object inside the tank with air to pop out the dent. Another technique was to fill it with water about half way and use a valve on gas cap to fill the rest with air. Have any of you ever repaired a tank that had this problem? If so, what did you do? I'd like to stay away from cutting the tank but may have to as a last resort. See the pics of the tank in the stuck and troubled section. Thanks for any help with this.

The guy who fixes our tanks stresses that they will only withstand very low pressure before a seam blows.

He cleans them VERY thoroughly to make sure that there is no vapour left inside to explode.

Thanks for all of the helpful replies. I may go ahead and take it to a local body shop and ask them some of the things you mentioned. Hopefully, they'll be able to help me.

Because of it being a center fill tank I understand why you might want to repair it and make it look nice. On the large tank you might want to take it to a local body shop. They have dent pullers that could pull the dent out without drilling a hole into the tank but because it's under the hood you would not need to remove the crease/wrinkle that would remain. This should give you a good fit with the hood. On the starting tank my recommendation would be to heat the lead solder and remove the small tank, this is easy to do, and work the dent out from the inside then solders the tank back in place. A local radiator shop, because they had lead solder, helped me with that task on my tank.
What condition was the rest of the tractor in?
Good Luck,
Kent

Thanks for your help. The rest of the tractor is in pieces right now but everything looks good. I have to order a reproduced hood since the old one was butchered pretty bad.

I'd also agree that the one on the back should be able to get with a bar. Top one you may just leave alone ? Air pressure in the tank controled with a regulator may pop it up. You can also glue something on there to pull on,or even use a stud gun from a body shop. These spot weld studs on that you hook a slide hammer to then they are easily ground down. May even be able to solder a pulling strap on ?

You can make a tool to press out these kinds of dents. Just bend some rebar or flat stock in a desired angle, insert it into the tank, and press them out. It looks to me like these should be easy to fix.

I would let it go...the dent is covered by the hood.
