There is a JD 853 running gear in the photo ads. Did JD make an 853? Thought maybe a 953, but doesn't look like a 953 either. Hubs look more like a 963.

There was a 943 which was the light weight plain model, A 953 which was heavier, and a 963 which commonly had springs and brakes and was the "heavy duty" version.

If the bolsters mount directly to the axle, it is likely a 943. If they mount to a raised mounting, but there are no leaf springs or provision for electric brakes, it should be a 953.

Were to hubs different? I have a 963. Plain steel caps & 15" wheels. My uncle has 2 953's with the JD cast hub cover & 16" wheels. Another interesting fact. He also has a 963. His came from factory with yellow hubs. Mine, a couple years newer came from the factory with green hubs.
Stan,

Hadn't thought about it. What day are you going? Might just try and get away and run over for a day.

Loren,

I have no definite plans for the Fuel Up. Most likely Thursday the 8th or Friday the 9th. If you think you can make it one of those days, let me know and I'll plan accordingly.

Drop me an e-mail.

Stan

Probably a 963. Easy way to tell the difference between a 953 and a 963 is look at the underside of the tongue. The 953 tongue was just a piece of open channel steel. The 963 was reinforced with a piece of steel that closed up the channel into a box tongue. Hi Stan Huff--- ole Mudsockbob here.

Bob,

How are things in the land of milk and honey? Didn't you tell me once that you had moved over by Crawfordsville?

Loren,

The only reference to an 853 that I find in my Deere Service Publications Catalog if for a row-crop head for a combine.

Hope you're doing well. Are you going to the Fall Fuel-Up at Flywheeler Park?

Stan
