I need more ponies... My 3010D is pulling a 14ft JD1600 MOCO. Wife will be upset if I buy a 4010 or 4020 so thought of buying a Turbo(M&W) and installing it.

I am no grease monkey, but so far do a fair job of keeping the baler/moco/tractor going. Is installing the Turbo difficult for a non-diesel mechanic???

You should consider that there is no oil cooler on a 3010. Turbos make extra heat and shorten old engine life. 3020's have oil coolers and are a better bet for a turbo, but still a 40 year old tractor.

Kind of depends whether you get an early M&W or a later one.Later ones are a lot easier to install. The M&W manual leaves a lot to be desired as far as a tutorial. Still have one somewhere.I have (at least) installed my share on M&W turbos over the years and I wouldn't waste my time on putting one on a 3010 or a 3020. I don't think you will be happy with the result.Yea, I know, they do sound good.

Chances of getting a used turbo that doesn't need to be rebuilt or replaced are not good. You could be looking at a grand in costs if you are not so lucky. I installed every one except one or two at Reynolds, so I think I speak from a lot of experience.Tell your wife to call me. LOL. I would suggest you look for a bigger tractor.Think about a 4320. Some can be found these days for the same price as a 4020.Now that is a sweet sounding engine with a straight pipe.

Your wife will probably be more upset when you tell her you need a new crank for your 3010, which is the usual result with a turbo---cranks have been known to break in stock 3010's; more often in hopped-up ones. Finding a useable 3010/3020 crank these days is nearly impossible, and when you do, it's big $$$. It'll cost you less to trade up to a 4010 than a used turbo setup and the possibility of a broken crank will for your 3010.

Joe-
Not bad to do- lately on E-bay there has been the orginal installation manuals- the only thing you probably wont be able to do is the injection pump setting WHICH you dont have to do, the turbo alone with factory settings on the pump will give you roughly 10 horse- 20 if you do the pump.

Adding power above factory rated specs on 42+ year old machine than working it hard? Can't get comfortable with the idea. Time to find a 4030 or 4230. Just put a 3010 decal set on it.
