4010 Diesel Hard to Start

I just purchased a "63 4010 diesel. First tractor ever and first diesel ever so its all new to me. My problem is the tractor is very hard to start when cold. By cold I mean first use of the day and it can be 60 degrees or 80 degrees. When I bought it, it was probably 90 degrees and didn't seem to have much trouble starting. But now, while cranking, white smoke comes out the exhaust and it tries to start and eventually one or two cylinders hit and it spins a little faster and eventually, it will usually take off. Spray a little ether in the air cleaner and soon as the ether gets to the cylinders, it takes right off. Once it starts, at an idle, no smoke whatsoever. About 1000 rpm and up with no load, smokes blue. Put a load on it, smoke mostly turns black. With no load, at 2000 rpm, there is a miss or flutter.

From what I have read here, seems like low compression is the problem but are there other areas to look at? Others have said that with low compression, white smoke continues even after starting. I only have white smoke during start.

I have checked and set the timing at 8 degrees. My pump ends in 4AF and has timed end inj scribed on the timing cover. What I have read here, this seems to be where it needs to be set.

Any thoughts, suggestions, or opinion are greatly appreciated. Thanks.

After using the tractor a few times, i have come to conclude that the pump has been turned up and it puts the fire out or floods it during cold start. anyone know how to turn the pump back down to factory?

THanks for all your replies and suggestions.

Just food for thought, if the injection pump has not been converted to speed advance timing , the timing is set at 14 degrees. I would doubt that is the case . Sounds like a compression or cranking speed problem.

Oh yeah, I tried timing it at 14 degrees and it wouldn't even think about running. Thanks.

I think the timed end injection stamped on the timing cover indicates that it has been converted to a speed advance pump and therefore is set at 8 degrees. Is this correct?

Thanks to all for your responses.

One of my 4320's is iffy on starting at 50 degrees and the other is iffy at 60 degrees. They both run very well and use no oil. A little either shot near the air cleaner stack, and they both fire up. I would say to buy a can of either for the first start of the day, and continue to run it the way it is.

I'll jump in and open a can of worms. Is it cranking over fast enough? Starter/electrical problems can cause poor starting due to insufficient cranking speed.

It probably had the head rebuilt at some time in the past and someone poor boyed it back together without paying attention to valve protrusion.I did the same on my 4010 and am going to fix in a week or two.I used it now for near 10 years that way but the head gasket is now leaking. also I never liked deere's method of either injection. it knocks far less with a shot at the aircleaner.Paul

Does it have glow plugs? If so are they working? If not, that could be part of the problem with the hard starting. Could be about time for a rebuild too...hard to tell from here.

NO glow plugs on the Waterloo tractors, but they had a factory-installed ether port... remove the cap, hold an ether can with no nozzle up to the port, and AWAY you go!

It may of became addicted to either. Prolonged use tends to do that. Rings may of broken or just plain worn out. I'd say time for new sleeves and pistons and a proper valve job. The new parts are redesigned for better starting too.
