You have to just let this one sit for a short spell. Sometimes a person's emotions gets the better of him and the decision process is tilted. With a stuck engine, not much can be told about the beast. And from the description, she is a long way from being a show tractor -- which is a great deal more than a new coat of paint and tires that stand up. The Model "A" is probably the most common model Deere ever built, or at least a toss-up with the "B". What I am saying, is to forget the water pump! My Opinion: I think it was more a change in preparation for the 60 than as an improvement for the JD-A tractor -- the change coming in toward the end of "A" production. Yes, upgrade kits were built and SOLD by Deere, but I rather imagine not that many were actually sold. This feature surely don't make the tractor a rare one. Besides, unless you are going into farming with the "A" as the work horse, I seriously doubt you will need one with a water pump -- just something else to fail! Many of two-cylinder tractor virtues can be traced back to simplicity. The long and short of my message -- Keep looking! Even the most complete, non-running Deere out there can eat your lunch in replacement parts and hired services during its "Path of the Phoenix". I know of a fellow here in Texas who claims the John Deere Model "D" he acquired for $100 was the most expensive tractor he ever bought -- food for thought. Be willing to pay a little more up front for a running, serviceable tractor & go from there. (PatB)
