Hello, I ran across a stuck Late JD A that has a small water pump that might be for sale. Is there a lot of JD A with a waterpumps? How many is this rare? or a specialty item? What is it worth? restored and as is meaning sheet metal rough, tires rough, and stuck but complete?

Thanks
Jerome K

Hello again
Thanks for the replies. I was just wondering if 650 is too much for this tractor. Tires hold air but need to be replaced if shown, It has the factory front rims and rear rims, the hood has been cut out, Complete but not sure if it has a tag. But it is stuck solid. The grills have minor dents. I thought with the waterpump it might be rare since I have never seen one in person other than this one. The frame is not welded like a lot of them that I see with that late style frame.

You have to just let this one sit for a short spell. Sometimes a person's emotions gets the better of him and the decision process is tilted. With a stuck engine, not much can be told about the beast. And from the description, she is a long way from being a show tractor -- which is a great deal more than a new coat of paint and tires that stand up.

The Model "A" is probably the most common model Deere ever built, or at least a toss-up with the "B". What I am saying, is to forget the water pump! My Opinion: I think it was more a change in preparation for the 60 than as an improvement for the JD-A tractor -- the change coming in toward the end of "A" production. Yes, upgrade kits were built and SOLD by Deere, but I rather imagine not that many were actually sold. This feature surely don't make the tractor a rare one. Besides, unless you are going into farming with the "A" as the work horse, I seriously doubt you will need one with a water pump -- just something else to fail! Many of two-cylinder tractor virtues can be traced back to simplicity.

The long and short of my message -- Keep looking! Even the most complete, non-running Deere out there can eat your lunch in replacement parts and hired services during its "Path of the Phoenix". I know of a fellow here in Texas who claims the John Deere Model "D" he acquired for $100 was the most expensive tractor he ever bought -- food for thought. Be willing to pay a little more up front for a running, serviceable tractor & go from there. (PatB)

$650 is fine if you like it. It is hard to put a price on one if you (we) don't see it. My above price guess is just a ballpark figure. They make a patch for the hood if it is cut around the muffler. Cost about $20. I haven't seen many A's with a weld on the frame. I have seen a lot of B's that were welded from running 4-row equipment. You would enjoy working on one and this may be a good start.

See if you can post a picture of it. Good luck.

At the same time the water pump came out in late 52 Deere offered a retrofit kit for all late styled A's from 47 to 52. (pump and larger bottom tank) The tractor you discribe would not be worth much. Maybe $300-400. Rough is another word for bad. You can find a nice running A for $2000 + or - $200. A fully restored A would bring $3250-3500 in most cases. You would have way more than that in this one if you did a nice resteration on it. But then restoring one is a real thrill. If you are trying to make money on it that won't happen. You will have way more in it than you would get out of it. The water pump won't make any difference in the price of this tractor.

Dear Jerome,
Of about 300,000 A tractors built between 1934 and 1952, only the last 3,000 built between March and June 1952 had water pumps. These unique tractors have a stronger frame, different flywheel and different flywheel covers among other differences. I spent a lifetime looking for a good one.

If the tractor serial # is above 700200 , the tractor left the factory with a water pump. Everyone below that did not and if it does now it was retrofitted by someone in the field . As for value, I haven't seen any bringing high resale prices.
