Hellow--it's me again--TEXAS. I don't want to ppour my sob story on you'll--but-3 weeks ago I came home from work and found my husband dead. Since then I have been trying to take care of so many things that he would have taken care of. One is his tractor--I guess I will ry to sell it--I don't know, but I am looking for some help. I have found someone who will look a it ( an airplane mechanic who has JD's of his own)and do some work, but on his estimate he figured $120.00 of labor to put the new key switch in because of having to figure out the wiring. My husband had bought the switch before he died.BUT he pulled the whole thing apart., let some time go buy, and then couldn't remember how to re wire it. I thought if anybody knew the pattern of the wiring then maybe this man wouldn't have so much trouble with that part and might not charge that much just to install the switch. My husband had been starting the tractor by sticking some screwdriver/s somewhere on it and it usually started. This man yesterday said the battery cables were bad and the battery (all added into the estimate further increasing it) and that the starter needed to be replaced. Not long ago, I took this starter to a shop for them to redo. I can't remember how long ago that was, but I will call the shop to see if they have a warranty period for their work. ANOTHER ISSUE: About a week before my husband died, he had someone and their truck trying to pull start the tractor. The tractors were my husband "thing" and I am sorry to say that often times when he would tell me something about the tractor i wouldn't pay full attention. But anyway, I know he said that after they tried to pull him(they did this at a really fast speed) he was saying that it had burned up the clutch in the tractor. I really don't mechanically understand that because I know that we had previously had a MF that we sometimes had to pull to start. But, my husband was somewhat tractor savy and he really dreaded having to split the tractor in half to do something with this clutch thing. Anyway this man's estimate to change the battery, cables, switch and starter was almost $700 and that's not even the clutch. Just looking for some hlp here so if anybody can point me in the right direction, I certainly would appreciate it.

Thanks,

TEXAS

Dang Tesas, you are between a rock and a hard spot. Sounds like the first vulture has circled. If you were nearby in IL I would put it in for nothing.

If that tractor looks (appearance) kinda like the condition you described, I hope that you all havve about gotten your money out of it along the way.

In my humble opinion, if you do not have someone to lend you a hand the ole girl would have to go as its or if it is setting in the back corner of the barn, just leave it be, like they say, it ain't eating nuthing.

Go to your DEERE dealer, and explain the situation to the service manger, and ask if he will print out a copy of the wiring diagram for you.

If he's a decent fellow, he will. If he won't, try another dealer, or post back, and one of us will get a diagram to you.

With a diagram "at hand", it shouldn't take more than 15 or 20 minutes for someone with ANY mech. skills at all to install that ignition switch for you.

First off since they pull started it and then had problems check and see if that tractor has the hi-lo option. Up by the steering wheel to the LEFT hand side do you have a lever going down into the dash ? and if so does it have a picture of a rabbit and a turtle ? Rabbit is hi speed turlte is lo speed.

If you have this option and since it was pull started and "clutch" problems were brought up.I'd now say you are looking at also repairing the hi-lo unit which is BIG dollars ! You may just want to list it on ebay explaining all this and take whatever it brings above salvage price.

Do not have that man work on it as I bet a dealer won't even charge you that much.

You need to open your email (enter your email address above like I did) so that folks can use a back channel to help you. No means of contact means no help!

Also, it would help if you would say where you are. Texas is a BIIIII IIIIG place!

What part of Texas do you live? There might be someone on this forum who could help you get switch installed. I agree it shouldn't take very long to install key switch as it only has 4-5 wires on it. Tx Jim

ma"am, sorry for your troubles. it hit home with me, since i"ve ben given a 3 to 5 years to live. i think this guy is trying to rip you off. that much labor is way to high. if your husband was able to crank the tractor with a screw driver, a very dangerous thing, then the battery, leads and starter should be ok and this guy is trying to rip you off. i"d run an add and try to sell the tractor as is unless you need it for some reason. you"d be better off to carry it to a tractor dealership to have it fixed. never take the first estimate from an indivual person to fix something for you. to many people take advantage of women in your situation. sorry for your loss.
