guy's, I need some advice. I have a 1965 4020 diesel powershift. Converted to a 12 volt system. The only way I can start it is to hot wire it. Jump the selenoid. I've replaced the ignition switch, I have power to and from the starter button. There are 12 volts to the starter. My service manual says it's the starter, but today I put a new selenoid on but that made no difference. The neutral safety switch has 12 volts to it but I can't get 12 volts out of it. It is right in front of the inching pedal on my model. I tried replacing the switch but no luck. I tried bypassing the switch but that didn't work either. Is there possibly another safety switch I am missing. Any help would be greatly appretiated. I am completely lost.
Thanks, Chuck

Safety 1st too. If he doesn't run over somebody on startup, he can count on burning down the drive shed & everything else in it.

There's TWO neutral safety switched on the PS's.

The one for the pedal which you've found, and another low down on the RH side of the tractor, on the PS valve block.

The two safety switches are in SERIES. They are connected up with YELLOW wire. Power from the starter button or key switch goes to one, passes through it, then passes through the other safety switch and on to the starter.

(I can't remember, offhand, which is FIRST in the circuit from the ignition switch.)

With your new neutral safety switch, did you get the kit with the little plastic "jig" for determining how many shim washers to use under the switch? (Obviously, you are depressing the "clutch" pedal while checking for continuity through the switch, RIGHT?)

On some of these tractors, there was a dealer-installed second starter relay ahead of the BIG solenoid on the starter.

A "Ford fender-mounted style" starter relay was mounted near the starter. It's coil was fed from the ignition/start switch. When it "pulled in", it switched the higher current needed to pull in the BIG solenoid on the starter.

Thanks Bob, Yes I depressed the pedal when checking. I never had to press it before, though. Thats when it was working. I did get the kit with the shimms. I don't know how to get that nylon piece in though. I will look for that other safety switch tomorrow and test that one. Thanks for the advice.

The nylon piece is the "gauge" to determine how many shims are needed. There SHOULD have been instructions in the bag with the parts.

I think I have a set around somewhere, if you need to know how to use it.

Thanks, for the help. Got the tractor in tonight and found the other safety switch. Found the switches to be good, but the wiring was bad going under the floor. Kind of expected on a 42 year old tractor. I am running new wires and putting on new connectors. It will be back mowing down corn stalks tomorrow. Thanks again Bob.
Sincerely,
Chuck
