To all of you who were kind enough to reply--thank you--Update on the 2040 problems: Found someone in my school district to look at the tractor--(not the $700 estimate guy) had to get the starter repaired and he "hot wired" it ( said he had to bypass the safety to get it wired) he installed the keyswitch--which by the way , the JD dealership service dept gave me the wiring diagram--thanks to whoever suggested I call the dealership-- he finally got it running, BUT--he asked me if my husband used to have to start it with either--Now, I definitely remember that he never had to use either--he used to just turn the key and it would start right up--Other than everything else being wrong( about to discuss that) why is it now needing either to start?

Anyway, he got it running but when tried to put into gear, it wouldn't even grind like it was trying to go into a gear, BUT the pto was engaed--he said it didn't make sense to him--(I'm trying to remember this correctly--doing a poor job of it)but something about the transmission/clutch/pto working together or something-that if the clutch wouldn't engage, then why the pto was engaging???

Anybody offer some thoughts here?? Why having to use either and the clutch problem????? ?

THANKS

JD offered 2 different styles of pto. Independent has a yellow handled lever in between the 2 gear shift handles that can be shifted in/out anytime. Continuos pto has a dual stage clutch, push half way to shift trans and all the way down to shift pto. Main drive clutch may be stuck. I agre with Mike on not spinning over fast enough to crank without either. Tx Jim

That starter may not be spinning it fast enough ? Bad battery, cables,or starter still not right ? hard to tell. Did you ever determine if it has the hi-lo shifter to the left of the steering wheel ?
