Ive been looking at a 46 B to buy and really doont know a lot about them. This would be my first old tractor to buy and restore so I thought this one might make a good victim.

It's pretty complete and runs and drives. After looking it over the worst things I see aren't too bad. The battery cover is missing, the exhaust manifold is rotted out on the bottom and the neck of the radiator for the cap is rusted away. While I'd really prefer one of those other colored tractors out there the JD's seem to be plentiful and easier to come by as far as parts and information goes.

The B is dual fuel electric start and is equipped with a unit on the back with a shaft for lift arms and has hydraulic outlets as well and appears to be original equipment. It also has an after market 3 point lift arm kit added to it.

I realize that it's hard to tell a lot without seeing it but what kind of ballpark figure should this machine be worth?

$500 - $800 is an average price for this tractor.

DrCyKosis, you didn't say what part of the country you are from( it makes a difference). Up here in Michigan A 46 "B" about the condition as you describe it would be worth $500-1,200. Remember parts are very expensive for those old beauties. If it needs many parts, you will have more into repairing it than it costs to buy it. Look it over very carefully for cracks in the cases, check the radiator for leaks & rotting out, look for leaks at the rear axle seals, make sure the 3pt. doesn't leak down, check the gas tank for seeping on the bottom, make sure all the gears are useable. If you find any major problems use them to adjust the offering price.
