Guys,
Could you tell me the pros and cons of doing an in frame overhaul vs. a complete, splitting the tractor. My 4020 diesel uses a lot of oil with a lot of blow-by. It has decent power and no knocks or other issues. I"m assuming it needs pistons and rings. Any input would be really appreciated.
Thanks,
Chuck

If the tractor is in the 6-8000 hour range and has had reasonable maintenance, the inframe would be the way to go.You can get a decent quality inframe kit from Clevite,or other aaftermarket sources for about$1100.This is pistons, liners, rings, seals and gaskets. Around $80. for new rod bolts and nuts. The head should be rebuilt by a reputable machine shop while it is off, with the standout properly set on the valves.More than likely the head will need at least exhaust valves and seats, possibly valve guides and should be flat surfaced.Last head I had done was right at $600. Wouldn't hurt to have the injectors tested also. You are looking at $2-2500 in parts, machine work, new fluids and filters, new thermostats, misc bolts etc. plus your time if you can do the work yourself.

The tractor has over 9000 hours on it. I just bought it last spring and am doing some hobby farming with it. I don't know what has been done to it in the past. I do plan on keeping it for along time.
Thanks, Chuck

hi--the biggest issue to me, is the camshaft.
the last 2 serious overhauls we did we pulled the motors. #1 to boil the blocks and #2 to roll in
new cam bushings for new cams. the camshafts were
worn and we planned on using these tractors a whole bunch!! which we did. how long do plan on
keeping this 4020? and how much do you use it? bye
